84% of Job Hunters who are part of a Job Club have success finding a Job.
A Job Club lets job hunters get together and discuss their job hunting needs.
Some of the things you should expect from your Job club:
- Networking Opportunities. Each person has a network of people, combining and sharing networks gives you even more opportunities. Your fellow Club Members must agree on this.
- Support. While people can be empathetic to your job search, only people who are experiencing what you are going through can really relate to it.
- Energize your job search – A place where people can provide you ideas, energy, and positive motivation. You must expect your fellow members to be positive and helpful.
- Exchange of job leads and locations of jobs. When you are out looking for job, you will find jobs that are not a fit for you. Other people also find jobs that aren’t a fit, but the job they find might be a fit for you and the job you find might be a fit for them. A Job Club lets members pool their job opportunities, the more the members give, the more the members get. The members of the club must want to be people who want to help out.
- A new view of a discarded idea. Many times we each discard ideas because at the time it wasn’t a fit for us. A good Job Club will recognize there are hundreds of different methods of job hunting. And will provide different ideas for each one of them.
- Supports others in their Job Hunting. For example, many people don’t bother applying for a job on Workopolis because of the quantity of people who apply. But the Job Club can make Workopolis work for you. Here’s how: (1) Follow the Workopolis process and apply normally. (2) Use your job club contacts to get introduced to somebody in the company doing the hiring. (3) Once you have been introduce, make it clear to your contact that your application is in the Workopolis queue and ask if they can contact Human Resources (HR) to see what the status is. This will move your application closer to the front of the queue. You will be moved for two reasons. (a) All resumes are equal when coming from Workopolis. HR recognizes its better for the company to have some connection (however tenuous) to a job hunter, rather than no connection at all. If your contact says something good about you, its a huge help. (b) By already being in the queue, you are not seen as trying to have an unfair advantage or being a queue jumper. You are seen as working in the system.. The effect is that HR (Human Resources) is happy, which is where you need to be.
To be effective a good job club must offer the following:
- The Job Club must be stable. People should be able to join a Job Club join every day. Some members find jobs immediately and some take several months. This causes a Job Club is inherently unstable since members leave once they find a job. The underlying structure of the club must remain through the change of membership. The Club can’t stop operating when founding members find a job.
- The Job Club must be accessible. For a Job Club to work, you need to be able access the other members of the Job Club.
- The Job Club must have a philosophy. The Job Club needs a set of consistent principles and direction and that you agree with.
- The Job Club must have a wide membership base. A Job Club with people from different business areas, different locations, and with different ideas will increase the number of opportunities for you.
- The Job Club needs to be inexpensive in time and money. When you are looking for a job, cash flow is tight and your focus must be on finding a job. Finding a job is what is important, not spending time and money on having a fun meeting. While you need to invest in money and time in finding a job, the money and time needs to be spent wisely.
- The Job Club must be moderated. New members will be enthusiastic and people who take way to long to find a job are sometimes jaded and bitter. Enthusiasm helps to find you a job. Its not fair when enthusiastic members have their hopes dumped on. There must be a moderator who has the authority to remove members who are not following the rules.
