I am member of the Glazer-Kennedy Inner Circle (and you should be too – click here to learn how to get started for free on GKIC). Each day I get e-mails on marketing ideas, each month I get newsletter of marketing and entrepreneurial information, some encouragement, and a million ideas. As well I get a CD and other stuff. Its one of my major sources of inspiration.
In the April 2008 issue there is a long discussion on the Three Common Habits Of Success Entrepreneurs. I won’t repeat the details, but I wanted to share and contrast these habits with some other speakers and their ideas.
According to Bill Glazer – Dan Kennedy’s partner here are the three common habits:
- Successful Entrepreneurs Read A Lot Of Books.
- Successful Entrepreneurs Continue To Work On Their Education
- Successful Entrepreneurs Create SMART Goals for themselves.
(SMART Goals are defined as Specific,Measurable,Attainable,Relevant,Time Bound)
Since GKIC sells training and knowledge, its kind understandable that Bill Glazer would push the first two topics. The last habit, I think is actually more important.
Bill Glazer then provides a clear understanding of why he believes these things are important. (GKIC members can download all old issues.)
I continually write and speak constantly about the power of Written Goals. While there are many different methods (SMART, Brian Tracy’s methodology, Visualization) they all work and they all contribute to Success.
Napoleon Hill has 16 different keys to success. Stephen Covey has his seven habits, In Success Through Balance I believe in focusing in on five areas and then developing skills in each of those areas.
However, Bill Glazer has thrown down the gauntlet and stated his Three Habits for the world.
Here are my three habits, which I believe each person must master as their starting point.
- Having clear and identifiable goals.
- Consistent and meaningful action towards some goal each and every day.
- Forming and maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude to each and everything in your life.
Having clear and identifiable goals
The purpose of clear goals effects everything you do. It helps you prioritize you day, week, year and life. It provides you a personal and independent set of measuring sticks. Goals help you decide what is relevant and what is not. The clearer your goals are, the simpler life will be, but you will in fact be managing a much more complex life. See my article on Written Goals here. See what my LinkedIn network has to say on written goals here.
Consistent and meaningful action towards some goal each and every day
If you take a small action each day towards your goals. It will seem as if you are making no progress. However, after a short length of time, it is amazing what is accomplished. Mao said a journey of a thousand miles is taken one step at a time. I have rarely accomplished anything huge in short amount of time. But, I have accomplished huge tasks, just doing a little at a time. I find it easier to complete anything large just doing it a little at a time. I learned to run marathons, which are 42 KM or 26.2 miles. It seems like a massive distance at first, but you start with a 1KM run. Then 5KM runs, then 10KMs and slowly grow and viola, in relatively short time, one year. You are able to complete the task. You don’t raise a child overnight, its one day at a time. See my article Drip Drip for more on this.
Forming and maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude to each and everything in your life
The last habit, I feel is a Positive Mental Attitude or PMA. To have a PMA requires me to be a realist. I need to look at the true facts of every situation. Then I need to make decision on how to reach my goal. If something doesn’t go correctly, then I need to change my plan, adjust my goal date, or review who I am working with. See what my LinkedIn network thinks about Positive Mental Attitude.
As you can see, all three of my habits for success all interact and all work together.
While Bill Glazer is a smart guy and a successful guy, and his three habits are important, I think my three habits are more relevant.
