First of all, let’s define our terms.
Successful means that you have accomplished your goal.
Job Hunter means you are looking for a job.
Pretty simple, eh? (The “eh?” is me making sure you know I am a Canadian!)
Its really not that simple in fact. In my not so humble opinion most job hunters are not successful.
It takes them too long to find a job. They don’t get the job they want. They don’t do the work they want.
In fact, I am sure you agree with me, you don’t want to be a job hunter, you want to find a career. You want to enjoy what you are doing.
Let us not forget that Slavery was abolished in North America with the end of the American Civil War. Therefore, you have and I have the ability to do what we want. Therefore, you don’t want a “Job” you want to do something you enjoy and something you love.
And that is what will drive you to be a successful job hunter.
Now every day will be a little different, but here are the things you must do each and every day.
Say the following:
I feel Happy!
I feel Healthy!
I feel Terrific!
I don’t care what you actually feel like. You need to create a positive environment for your self.
I have written elsewhere about the importance of talking and saying things out loud. When life is challenging, I repeat that mantra over and over again until I start to believe it.
It works because of a concept called Cognitive Dissidence. You can not say something and believe something else. So what ever you want to believe, just say it out loud over and over again. You will believe it. Its the same as your mother telling you how great you are as a kid. If she did tell you, you believe it, if your mother told you something else, you probably believe what she told you. Now its time to tell yourself something new.
Read Your Goals Out Loud
If you don’t have written goals, then get them written down. I have lots of articles on setting and writing goals.
Here is the first lesson:
Make them positive, in the present, and measurable.
For example:
“I weigh 167 pounds”
“I earn $117,000 per year.”
“I run the Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 3o minutes”
“I have teenage boys who listen to what I say.”
“I have stopped smoking”
Why the Positive, In the Present, and measurable – see the first thing successful job hunters do.
Review The List Of Target Companies You Want To Work For
If you don’t have a list of target companies, then you are not a Guerrilla Job Hunter. I recommend you get the CD to see what a Guerrilla job hunter is all about. You can get it on the right side.
The short and sweet is – if you know what you want, you will get it.
During your review, write down two ideas to help connect with those companies.
Make sure you have gotten what ever information on that company you can. Make sure you know their competitors.
Contact Five People That Will Move You Closer To Your Target Companies
There are a number of ways to do this. LinkedIn will give you a direct connect to them. However, I don’t recommend sending out a boring email to them. Other articles tell you how to contact people and what to say.
And the Guerrilla Job Hunting Kit will help you write a job hunting cold calling script.
Here is the minimum:
- Call one person and speak with them on the phone
- Arrange a face-to-face meeting with somebody
- Send an article of interest to another
- Have an information interview with another
- Find out how you can help the last one.
Attend A Networking Event
This one was a little different, since its not done every day, I suggest two or three a week. Make sure you have your job hunting business card with you. (Yup, that’s another article.)
Write An Article For Your Website
If you are an expert in something, and you are. Write a short article for your website about what you know. Maybe review suitable products. Compare companies in the industry. Find something to write about that shows you are an expert.
Exercise For 30 Minutes
I get that job hunting is emotionally difficult. Some people might get depressed. But, since you read my stuff everyday, I am certain you are not one of them.
One sure way of avoiding depression and unhappiness is to exercise. If you have been a couch potato – then a 30 minute brisk walk is a great start. Get the heart rate above 70% of your maximum. You can calculate your maximum as 220-(your age). So if you are 50 years old, 220-50 = 170. 70% of that is 119 BPM.
You will lose some weight, you will feel good about yourself.
This is my Monday Morning Job Hunting help. I have taken material provided to me by Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.
Kevin and David have been interviewed by CNN, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.
