I don’t believe in getting into quantity vs quality discussions on LinkedIn.
I have written that up and there is absolutely no question that quantity is important.
But, let me share with you some of the values of a large network.
- I post questions on LinkedIn Answers asking people for success stories. My large network ensure many many people see the questions and have the opportunity to answer them. A small network limits my ability to reach out to those people.
- I work with the Access Group to create kitchen table conversations which attract 60 to 80 C-level executives in Toronto. Each of the these kitchen table conversations address specific issues in a vertical market. A large network means that I can reach many people to invite them.
- People are always looking for employment. A large network enables people to look for jobs and or connect with others.
- I work with CATA that facilitates companies to invest in or acquire or to license technology. Every time I have an opportunity – I can share that among my network.
- I am a marathon runner and so are many many other people. When you go to a marathon in a strange city – a large network enables you to find somebody that can help out.
- I run 6 different Internet properties. Each catering to a different community. LinkedIn enables me to touch people for these communities.
There are 6 different reasons.
When people tell me their LinkedIn success stories – many of these stories would not have happened if there wasn’t somebody with a large network helping everybody connect up.
For a small and intimate network – I use Facebook. I only connect their with friends and family. I am sure very few LinkedIn people want or care to see my vacation pictures.

I wish I had read this 6 months ago when I first joined LI. It took me 6 months to figure out this stuff on my own . . . Reading the article can put you 6 months ahead of the learning/rationalization curve. . .
I absolutely agree to the six reasons stated above. I say linkedIn is the best business network site ever. The connections are worth the time we spend on the computer. I just created an account on it, and it proved to be useful than any other methods we have ever adopted for networking, in our company (SOGO International Manpower Recruiting).
