I am not going to review the entire 300 pages, but let me highlight some of it.
There are many many personal stories through out the guide.
- There are interviews with many successful celebrities on how they schmoozed (or networked) their way to the top. Included is George Plimpton (Author) , AJ Benza (Actor & Columinst) , Rob Nelson (Political activist) , Bob Bennett (Superlawyer) , George Bell (Former Chairman Exite@Home) , and Jane Pratt (Jane Magazine)
- Some interesting profiles of Willie Brown (Mayor of San Fransisco), Elizabeth Dole (Politician) and Susan Molinari (Politician) )to name a few.
- Every couple of pages there are success stories from regular people.
- There is an interesting interpretation of Joseph (of many colour coat fame) from the bible as a story of schmoozing (networking)
The book organizes the practical aspects into two sections called Schmoozing 101 and Schmoozing 102.
Schmoozing 101 provides all the building blocks:
- Overcoming natural shyness,
- techniques to build confidence while schmoozing,
- dealing with difficult people,
- having fun,
- presentation,
- ways to remember names,
- telephone schmoozing (Don’t do this with Donald Trump – he hates it!)
- All about listening, and much more.
The section called “Who Do You Know?” explains how to schmooze with your existing – including family, work, and all sorts of people we might be embarrassed to contact.
One of the keys to job hunting is networking. The “Who Do You Know?” section will give you great insights into helping expand your job hunt.
Combining “Who Do You Know?” with “Schmoozing 101” can have a major impact on your job hunt.
If you have started a job in Real Estate, Insurance, MLM, or any other type where they suggest you start with your immediate circle, then “Who Do You Know?” is a great place to start.
The next section called “Who Do They Know?” builds on “Who You Know?” to grow your network further.
I love the explanation of “Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon”. It shows how Kevin Bacon is connected to every hollywood personality. Including Elvis Presley, Walter Matthau, Ice Cube Laurence Fishburne, Bob Hope, Steve Martin, James Dean, Barbara Barrie, Gary Coleman, Jami Gertz, Tom Hnaks, and Evel Knievel.
There is a list of ice breakers to help you get started Schmoozing with strangers.
The section “Who’s That?” gives some great tips on how to go about meeting specific people that you want to Schmooze with.
Another cute part is the the two page diagram about how to schmooze at a party.
Schmoozing 102 gives a whole number of ideas of how to keep in touch with your extensive network. If you are a LinkedIn fan – some great ideas there.
The next section is real important for the job hunter – “Schmooze To Find A Job“. It gives many real life examples of how people have used all the Schmoozing techniques explained in the book to find a job.
The section on using the Internet for Schmoozing “You @ Schmoozing.com” covers some interesting ideas. It doesn’t go into deep depth on technology, but it focuses on some intersting parts of it. Great for technie people to read, so that can understand some of the frustrations of non-tech people.
There is a whole section on minorities and how they can Schmooze. Interesting comments from Debbie Chase, former communications director for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Melissa Wahl, who is National Director of the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE), and John Honaman, the executive director of the
National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA).
Bottom line? Schmoozing is for everyone.
I recommend you get the Vault Guide To Schmoozing. It free, interesting, and helpful.
