Today we are going to talk about the hardest habit to create. But this habit is the one that will get you the job.
By the way, it actually makes use of a number of other habits you have developed.
In marketing, it been proven over and over again, that a a prospect must be exposed to your ad or sales pitch at least 7 times before they buy.
That is why you see the same television ad over and over again during the same tv show.
Its why when you drive down a highway, you see the same billboard over and over again.
Its why you see the same ad in the newspaper in the same place day after day.
What does this have to do you with your job hunt?
Highly successful job hunters use this rule of thumb and contact employers multiple times.
You want to be a successful job hunter don’t you?
You should start doing it, today.
All marketing people create a plan for “touching” prospects. In your case, its your target employers. Your plan should be 7 times in the next 4-6 weeks.
There is a difference between you and billboards and tv ads.
You need to be sure to vary the means of contact and — this is key to everything — always have something new and different to say.
In other words, give employers another reason why you are the perfect candidate for them to hire.
Here is a suggested contacting strategy you can follow or take and modify:
Day 1: Mail well-researched cover letter and resume to ABC Corp., promising to call in two days to follow up.
Day 3: During the follow up call; ask to meet face-to-face.
Day 5: Mail clipping of newspaper interview with the company president, underline comments about strategic plan that you can help her achieve. (Clippings are a great Guerrilla Job Search Tactic. This is the simple version.)
Day 8: Visit company office for coffee with friend who will be there for a meeting; ask if president got the article in the mail.
Day 14: Mail white paper to hiring manager, “5 Ways to Cut Customer Service Costs at ABC Corp.,” based on research I’ve done on days 1-10. (White papers are a very powerful Guerrilla Job Search Tactic)
Day 16: Call hiring authority to follow up; ask again for a face-to-face interview.
Day 22: Email company president a compilation of 5-10 Web links and news items about ABC Corp. found using Google.com/alerts in days 1-21; offer suggestions for how you can help with each.
Now. Does targeting one employer with 7 contacts seem like a lot of work to you?
The answer is yes.
But that’s the wrong question to ask.
The right question is this: Do you think any other job hunter is going to create and follow such a detailed plan for getting the attention of this employer?
The answer is no.
And that’s good news for you, if you’re willing to do what it takes to be a highly successful job seeker.
By the way, Crystal followed a similiar job hunting tactic. She was astounded by the results. She started out expecting a $23,000 a year job, but was offered a $43,300 job instead. The employer was blown away. Samantha did not know that the extra work she put in, made her a special person.
