What is Three Feet From Gold all about?

In 1937, Napoleon Hill wrote a masterpiece that has sold over 16 million copies and still remains a bestseller today. Think and Grow Rich inspires readers who want to learn the success strategies used by leaders and experts throughout the world. The lives of many people have been improved after reading the book that it continues to sell more than a million copies every year.

Think and Grow Rich is quoted by almost every great and successful person of the twentieth and the twenty-first century. Once a person makes the choice to be successful – its only a matter of time until they discover and read the Think and Grow Rich.

In the first chapter of the book Napoleon Hill tells a story that introduces many of the themes of the book:

“An uncle of my friend R. U. Darby was caught by ‘gold fever’ and he went west to Colorado to dig and grow rich. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has ever been taken from the earth.”

The uncle did find gold. He rushed home to tell about his good fortune. After gathering funds and assistance from his family, friends, and neighbors, he returned to his claim to mine the fortunes that lay beneath the surface.

“Down went the drills. Up went the hopes. . .” Unfortunately, the gold disappeared. Darby and his uncle continued, desperately, to dig, attempting to pick up the vein again, but to no avail. The uncle was soon overwhelmed with frustration and quit working the claim.

Defeated, they sold the machinery to a local junk man for a few hundred dollars and took the next train heading east.

Realizing the mine had once produced treasure, the junk man sought the counsel of a local engineer. The engineer explained how the fault line can separate a vein of gold. He suggested that if the junk man returned to the mine and dug a mere three feet from where the first discovery was made, he would find more precious ore.

With pick in hand, the junk man followed the expert’s advice and hit one of the greatest gold stores the nation has ever seen.

“The junkman took millions of dollars in ore from the mine because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.”

Darby eventually recovered from his own losses from the mine bust, but he did not forget about the huge fortune he and his uncle had missed simply because they gave up too soon and didn’t seek expert advice. Darby said, “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say no when I ask them to buy insurance.”

Darby ended up selling over a million dollars in life insurance each year for most of his career. He realized that before one can succeed, he or she will face defeat, even failure. Most people quit, but the successful push past defeat to realize their dreams.

Taking to heart the lesson that “more gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has ever been take from the earth,” Hill went on a quest to interview his era’s top leaders to discover what attitudes and behaviors they applied to their achievements. Speaking with people such as Edison, Bell, and Ford, Hill discovered a set of principles (referred to as “gold nuggets”) that were printed in book form. From these interviews, Hill established the modern movement in personal development.

Teaming with the Napoleon Hill Foundation, Greg Reid is blessed to carry on the tradition by inviting a new group of leaders to be interviewed. These “movers and shakers” share the principles, values, and attitudes they use to continue drilling toward their goals. Samuel Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A

Cathy is a devout Baptist who has taught Sunday School for over 55 years. As an extension of his convictions, all of the company’s locations (whether company-owned or franchised), are closed on Sundays — a rare policy within the food-service industry — to allow its employees to attend church and spend time with their families

Cathy has received numerous honors, including the Norman Vincent and Ruth Stafford Peale Humanitarian Award, the Horatio Alger Award and the Boy Scouts of America Silver Buffalo Award. Mr. Cathy was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2003 and listed as one of the wealthiest people alive.

James Amos (Former CEO, MBE/UPS Stores)

Former Chairman/CEO, MBE was the world’s largest and fastest growing franchiser of retail business, communication and postal service centers. The MBE Network comprised nearly 4,500 locations worldwide, with master licensing agreements in more than 80 countries around the world. In 2001, Amos was instrumental in orchestrating the sale of MBE to United Parcel Service who subsequently renamed the system, The UPS Store.

A graduate of the University of Missouri, Amos was honored as the 1998 scholar-in-residence and in 2000 and 2003 with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Recognized in “Marquis Who’s Who in America,” “Who’s Who in American Executives,” “Who’s Who in Finance and Industry,” “Who’s Who in American Authors,” and “The International Authors and Writers Who’s Who”

Evander Holyfield (Boxing Champion)

A Professional boxer from the United States and a multiple world champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, earning him the nickname “The Real Deal”. Evander is the only person in history to receive The heavyweight championship an unprecedented 4 times.

With his well publicized belief in Christianity, he keeps reminding the public before and after his fights that he is a born-again Christian, wearing t-shirts with the word Pray in public.

Jack Mates (Retired CEO, Velcro USA)

Considered a pioneer in the fastener industry, Mates was the founding President and CEO of Velcro, USA. After serving many years in the corporate arena, with great success he turned his focus toward a life of service.

Although he does not consider himself a hero, Jack has been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross for his outstanding achievements in aviation and later went on to become CEO of the foundation of the same name.

Debbi Fields founder Mrs. Fields Cookies

At age 20 and without any business experience, Debbi convinced a bank to finance an unproven business concept that appeared to have little likelihood of success. On August 16, 1977, Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chippery opened its doors to the public in Palo Alto, California.

Mike Helton (President, NASCAR)

As a child in Bristol, Va., Mike Helton loved to go to Bristol Motor Speedway with his dad and watch races. He probably never imagined at that time that he would one day be the president of NASCAR.

Helton attended hometown King College (Tenn.) as an accounting major and worked for a local radio station while attending school. As host of a Saturday morning talk show, Helton’s favorite topic was racing.

Helton later became the public relations director at Atlanta Motor Speedway and kept on advancing up through the racing ranks, including stops at Daytona and Talladega.
In 1999 he was named senior vice president and chief operating officer for NASCAR. Then in 2000, Helton became the first person outside of the France family to serve as president of NASCAR.

In 2000, King College awarded Helton with an honorary doctorate when he spoke at graduation.

Christine J. Toretti (CEO, Jack Drilling Co.)

A pioneer in many walks of life, Christine Toretti is the Chairman and CEO of the S. W. Jack Drilling Co., the largest privately-held land-based drilling company in the United States. She also serves on various corporate boards around the nation. Her astute business acumen, her ability to transcend gender-biases in the workplace, and her reputation as a business turn-around expert, make her a much sought-after advisor.

In addition, Christine serves on many non-profit boards including the NCAA Foundation, International Medical Corps, and the Gettysburg Battlefield Museum Foundation. Christine is the Founder and Chair of the Anne Anstine Excellence in Public Service Series, a training program designed to educate, empower and advance Republican women.

Dr. Tom Haggai (President/CEO IGA)

He began his career as a minister at the early age of 13, and left the pulpit years later, in 1963, to speak within the business community. At the height of his career, Haggai averaged 250 speeches a year, including many trips abroad. In 1986, he made a major career shift and became chairman and CEO of IGA.

Ruben Gonzalez (The Luge Man)

Being an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker and author, Three Time Olympian, Ruben started his Olympic dreams late in life. Where most begin at 10, he began at 21 after watching Scott Hamilton on win a gold medal on TV. He thought, if he could do it, so could he.

Realizing he was not the best athlete, he chose a sport where people would quit. His plan was simple; he would find a sport that there were many broken bones and drop outs, only he wouldn’t give up no matter how hard it became. He chose the Luge.

Drayton McLane Jr.(Owner, Houston Astros Franchise)

An American entrepreneur, Drayton is chairman of the McLane Group and chairman and CEO of the Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros. In 2006 he was ranked #322 on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans.

McLane puts aside a large amount of time to serve on civic and charitable committees. Drayton Jr. currently serves as: VP of Executive Board—Boy Scouts of America; Chairman of Board of Trustees—Scott and White Memorial Hospital; Member of National Board of Governors—Cooper Institute of Aerobics Research; director—Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University; Member of the Greater Houston Partnership; Member of United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast.

JaHja Ling (Acclaimed Symphony Conductor)

Being of Chinese descent and is now an American citizen. He began to play the piano at age 4 and studied at the Yayasan Pendidikan Musik School of Music. At age 17, he won the Jakarta Piano Competition and, one year later, was awarded a Rockefeller grant to attend The Juilliard School. There he completed a master’s degree and studied piano with Mieczyslaw Munz and conducting with John Nelson. He then studied orchestral conducting at the Yale School of Music under Otto-Werner Mueller and received a doctor of musical arts degree. He was a conducting fellow at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute.

Currently, Mr. Ling resides in southern California and conducts the San Diego Symphony.

Richard Cohn (Publisher, The Secret)

Co founder of Beyond Words publishing where they currently release around 15 new titles in the Mind-Body-Spirit category each year in partnership with Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

In addition, they also serve as a wholesale distributor to international booksellers and retailers, including Costco, Indigo Books in Canada, and Cygnus Books in the UK, as well as over 3,000 independent bookstores and gift or specialty shops around the world.

Known best for releasing the Blockbuster (The Secret), Richard considers himself an overnight success, only 23 years in the making.

Ronald D. Glosser (Retired CEO, Hershey Trust and the M.S. Hershey Foundation.

Ronald D. Glosser was born in Conesville, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Ohio Wesleyan University. In addition, Mr. Glosser graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers, and later received an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from Lindsay Wilson College.

Mr. Glosser began his banking career with Cleveland Trust where he served from 1957 to 1968, before taking a position as Vice President and Senior Trust Officer with Goodyear Bank in Akron. He became President of Goodyear Bank in 1973 and remained in that position until 1982, at which time it was acquired by National City Corporation. His presidency continued with National City Bank, Akron until March 1989. A that time, Mr. Glosser accepted a position as President and CEO of both The Hershey Trust and M.S. Hershey Foundation in Hershey, Pennsylvania until his retirement in December 1995.

Steven E (Founder, Golden Key Wellness)

California native Steven E has become a staple within the health and wellness community.

From humble beginnings, he started a personal training business that would flourish from day one. His well rounded background of many of today’s fitness programs has lead him to create one of the most intuitive systems in the market.

Lauren Nelson

Lauren is a beauty queen from Lawton, Oklahoma who holds the Miss America 2007 title. Nelson is the second consecutive Miss America and sixth in the history of Miss America to hail from this state.

Nelson was Miss Teen Oklahoma 2004, and in this role, she performed at the 2005 Miss America Pageant.[2] En route to Miss America, she won the Miss Oklahoma State Fair local title and then competed in the Miss Oklahoma pageant for the first time on June 11, 2006, and was crowned Miss Oklahoma 2006, for which she received a $16,000 scholarship. At age nineteen, she was the youngest contestant to become Miss Oklahoma.

Nik Halik – The Thrillianiare.

Founded the Financial Freedom Institute in 2001 as an education vehicle to train and inspire men and women to “seize the day” and take control of their own financial futures. His foundation platform for achieving this, is the stock market and in particular, option trading.

Success has allowed him to afford a number of real life adventures, including Running with the bulls, descending to the deck of the Titanic and enjoying lunch on it, as well as a journey to the edge of space and astronautical training with the Russian Orbital Space Program, over 65 miles above the earth.

Taddy Blecher – Entrepreneur, University Co-founder

Taddy Blecher must be the first person to have founded a university from a fax machine.

A few years ago, from his office in Johannesburg in South Africa, without any structures, courses or staff, he began faxing out a letter of invitation to 350 schools.

With over 3500 applications to a School that did not exist, Dr Blecher and a handful of colleagues were able to borrow a building for the university.

From There, magic happened where the idea exploded into what has become the premier college to help underprivileged students become more than farmers and laborers where before, society had cast them away.

Erin Gruwell

Nothing could have prepared Erin Gruwell for her first day of teaching at Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif. A recent college graduate, Erin landed her first job in Room 203, only to discover many of her students had been written off by the education system and deemed “unteachable.” As teenagers living in a racially divided urban community, they were already hardened by first-hand exposure to gang violence, juvenile detention, and drugs.
