How To Use LinkedIn For Job Hunting

Recruiting firms have more candidates than jobs and established recruiters have long lists of people in their  database. For recruiters the goal is to find the “Ideal candidate”. If you are looking for a job you need to be an found by the recruiter and be seen as an “Ideal Candidate”.

The process to be seen as an “Ideal Candidate” is the same steps followed by great marketing people to make a sale. Unfortunately many executives looking for a new position do not have the necessary marketing or sales experiences needed to market themselves.

Ideal candidates are the best asset a recruiter has. To find a job  – you must be seen as an “Ideal Candidate”.

In fact job hunting can be viewed as a sales and marketing effort trying to make a single sale. When viewed this way, the process becomes a straight forward problem involving several stages:

  1. Creating a advertising campaign that creates desire for you.
  2. Managing the media that you are advertising in – for job hunting, the media is LinkedIn
  3. Finding the customer which is an in-house recruiter or an independent recruiter who makes the referral to the company
  4. And finally performing the interview and negotiating your new job contract.

LinkedIn has become the main source used by recruiters to find job candidates. Recruiter see LinkedIn as a treasure of potential candidates. In fact – many job recruiting efforts start and end with LinkedIn.

LinkedIn levels the playing field for you when you are looking for a job. It makes you available to every recruiter on the planet. You have the same opportunity as everyone else, if you can make your LinkedIn profile the one found first.

On the other hand LinkedIn has increased the challenge for you, because you are now competing with everyone else on LinkedIn.

To be seen among the crowd you need to harness all the power that LinkedIn can provide you.

You need to create a LinkedIn marketing program that will move you to the top of every search made of a company.

While LinkedIn makes your resume available to every recruiter on the planet, every other job hunter is also available to those recruiters.

The 25 million people on LinkedIn means that for a recruiter there are many opportunities to find the “Ideal Candidate”.It’s getting harder and harder to find the “Ideal Candidate” from the thousands of results provided by LinkedIn.

To be found on LinkedIn, you need to learn to accomplish two things on LinkedIn:

  1. Create a profile that comes up when a recruiter is searching.
  2. Create a profile that when read, creates the desire for the recruiter to contact you.

LinkedIn can put you in front of every job opportunity that you are qualified for. But you need to learn how to accomplish a few more things on LinkedIn:

  1. Learn to actively search search out people
  2. Learn how to sell yourself in writing

Here are some of the 41 recommendations I have on my LinkedIn Profile:

Susan Stephen , Account Executive, NOREX, Inc “I have been recently introduced to Zale Tabakman through the LinkedInCanada. I am located in Minneapolis, MN and travel to British Columbia and Alberta every month. My goal is to meet IT professionals who understand that it is impossible to stay on top of new technology and the power of collaboration in an open, unbiased enviroment, to learn best practices from each other is a valuable tool for everyone in all industries and sectors. Zale invited me to attend a “Best Practices” session with recommendations how to better use LinkedIn. My colleague and I gleaned some valuable suggestions. Our organization is on a ramp up curve using Linkedin as a new contact tool and we have had some internal “lunch & learns” to share best practices, how we have been using it and better ways to use this ever evolving tool. It’s very exciting and I agree with Zale “there are good ways and bad ways to use LinkedIn”. My take away, is to add to my profile about my interests and goals so others will feel comfortable and confident that I have their best interests in mind to help them become more productive and successful.” September 25, 2008

Roberta Shafto , Director, New England Life
We like to call Zale is the “Houdini of Motivation”. Why do I say that? He has somehow
managed to eek out more productivity in a 24 hour day than most people can in a full week (including the weekend). Even more important is Zale’s ability to inspire others to find the energy and faith balance needed to give their own lives, both personal and professional, a turbo charge. What’s amazing is that living a fuller life becomes easier and following Zale’s techniques becomes an unconscious ritual after a while.” September 24, 2008

Eric Zigelman “Zale was able to provide me with some very strategic consulting advice on how to hire and place elite SAP talent across the country with my present employer [Addmore Group - eric@addmoregroup.com - (416) 433-7812]. He was specifically able to offer me expertise insight in how to tackle the SAP market from both a full time and contract perspective. Since speaking with Zale my confidence and personal numbers have sky rocketed.” September 15, 2008

Pradyumna Chaudhuri, Director – Technical Communication, Interra Information Technologies Inc. “Have been an ardent follower of Zale’s zeal and infectious energy. I have been a LinkedIn fan and user for a few years and have been continuously trying to increase my network. Have learned loads from his insights and his mails have helped me redirect my effort towards enabling success to happen! Have gone through his site www.ZaleTabakman.ca and many articles that he has selected and recommended. His commitment and his effort to walk his talk is highly appreciated. Thanks for making a huge difference Zale!” September 11, 2008

"I am thrilled with the direction my business is going. I believe in the "Law of Attraction" where I am seeing many more good things being unfolded right before my eyes. And what's amazing above it all is that it doesn't seem like I'm selling. People who contacted me have already been sold on my website. They have already seen and felt my passion and know that they want what I have to offer. When they call me, their mind was already made up to make that purchase."
