This habit is great and its found with people with no marketing experience.
Unfortunately, some job seekers often equate employment status with self-worth. They feel if they are unemployed they should be ashamed of themselves.
Being unemployed is a fact. You may have gotten into this situation by circumstances out of your control or even under your own control. (Read made a mistake and got fired.)
It doesn’t matter anymore. Its done. Its water under the bridge. Its spilt milk.
Move on.
The bad habit here is to be too embarrassed to tell friends and family about your job search.
Trust me – you won’t get paid more for finding a job entirely on your own.
Keeping your job hunt a secret will keep you from getting a paycheck longer period than if you tell as many people as possible, starting in your own home and on the block where you live.
They know you and they like you.
They will try to help you.
Today, before your next bathroom break (yes, I want to give you a sense of urgency) make a list of the 20 most-successful, most-connected people you know.
From that list how many have to talked to about your job hunt?
How many have of these well connected people have you spoken with to make sure they know the following:
(It got to be spoken too – in fact face-to-face is the best)
- Do they know the title of the job you seek?
- The city where you want to work?
- The type of employer you want to work for ( have you handed them a list of 10-20 company names)?
If they don’t know these things, then you won’t find work as fast as you could. If you don’t know these things, then you will be waiting a long time for a new job.
To get hired quickly, tell everyone. Not 10 people. Or 23. Everyone — every person you meet, every day.
Don’t be shy.
