In many of the articles in this series, I speak about using Direct Mail techniques to get job interviews.
I recommend Direct Mail because it works. It works on percentages.
I have lots of articles on Direct Mail for the entreprenours who read ZaleTabakman.ca.
(That is a part of my site that job hunters rarely look at, until they decide to start their own business.)
Let’s assume you have decided to use direct mail.
The main thing you need to track is response rate. How many times do people respond to your mailing.
Your response rate is always represented as a percentage.
So if 5 out of 10 people respond to your direct mail (or e-mail, or phone calls or any other marketing tactic) you have a 50% response rate – which by the way would be fantastic.
Knowing and then improving your response rate is core to the success to any of your tactics.
There are lots of techniques to improve any particular tactic.
Back to direct mail.
To increase the pull of your direct mail campaigns then consider putting together matching letterhead and envelopes that have your picture on them.
I use just my face (everywhere) with quotes from clients to increase my direct mail.
You can do the same thing.
I recommend you do this with your second and third tier prospects because the direct one-on-one approach will work better.
This is a great idea for marketing and sales people who want to change industry and need to generate a large quantity of leads quickly.
Action Steps:
- Use a good quality head shot.
- Make sure you use the highest quality on a digital camera. You’ll need a 400 dpi resolution jpeg to ensure a crisp picture – that is a lot higher than what is used on web sites.
- Wear a good suit and tie – it shows through.
- Make sure glasses don’t reflect the flash. You can shoot in daylight, or add powder, or just take tem off.
- Use a light background behind you and wear dark clothes – makes you look serious and important.
- Wear a contrasting color shirt. For example white with a blue suit, so you can be seen clearly when the picture is shrunken to one square inch and printed in black & white or gray tones.
- Don’t wear stripes.
- Hand-address the envelopes and your response rate will significantly increase.
- Look around my site for the articles for the entrepreneurs- don’t be afraid to steal some ideas from there.

This article is just a small sample of how you can do to take control of your Job hunt and make it effective. I work closely with the two experts in the field, Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.
Job hunters who use “Click and Apply” wonder why they are not getting interviews and ultimately taking far too long to get a job. I hope you are not using “Click and Apply” as your major tactic. You have many more strategies and tactics to make an effective job hunt.
The only Job Hunting system I recommend is the Guerrilla Job Search System.
The system works, because it helps you do what you do best. Kevin and David have been interviewed by Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.
Go right now and listen to a sample of how Kevin and David will get your job search into high gear
If you want to know why I think the Guerrilla Job Search System is so effective for job hunters read my review of it here.
