What if the help-wanted ad includes only a fax number as their point of contact? How do you contact them later to make sure they got your resume?

First of all, realize that any ad that does not provide a company name and mailing address may not be 100% legitimate. It could be someone merely collecting resumes, like a recruiting firm. So your energies may be spent applying for other jobs elsewhere.

Having said that, if you really want to find the contact info for a company that runs only a fax number, try the reverse phone directly at http://www.anywho.com. There you can type in the phone number and often find the company name and mailing address.

And once you have that information, you can call 411 to get their phone number, or find their Web site at Google.com and research them. Or both!

Action Step: There’s almost always a way to find out full contact information for companies that don’t include it in their job postings. Try to exhaust all avenues of research to find the name, telephone number, mailing address and (if possible) Web site for every company you apply to.

Once you know the “who,” “what” and “where” of target companies, you can follow up with them effectively. Moreover, you can research and uncover problems and/or opportunities facing your potential employers, then include that information in your cover letters.

Once you have the company information – use LinkedIn to get a contact name.
