In the current job climate, being highly qualified can be a problem.
Companies may not need the qualifications or don’t want to pay for it.
This is a serious problem for highly qualified individuals like yourself.
On the other hand, you can use the fact that you are over qualified for a posted job to get the job.
Large companies like to plan for the future. While the business climate make suck right now, it will be much better sometime in the future.
Successful companies are using the current situation to get ahead of the competition.
They want to be ready for the upcoming boom. It will happen, it always happens.
Why don’t you do the same thing and align yourself with companies who think this way? Or at least think they do.
Send your cover letter and start it with a strong statement, It is obvious from my resume that I’m over-qualified for the job you have advertised, so let me tell you why you should interview me and consider “super-sizing” your opportunity”.
Write a bulleted list of 3-5 benefits you think they might be interested in.
In your close say something to the effect that
“I am old enough to have already learned from my mistakes – so my experience is more cost effective than a more junior person.
In a few months, or years, you’ll need to send them on training to upgrade their knowledge, whereas I come fully equipped to do the next job too.”
Action Steps:
- Make sure you prove you are already qualified for the next position.
- Connect where they currently are to where they will be going, and how you can help them get there.
- Point out any certificates or advanced training which you already have that someone in that job might be expected to acquire.
- Point out any retraining allowances or incentives employers might be eligible for if they hire a more seasoned person.

This article is just a small sample of how you can do to take control of your Job hunt and make it effective. I work closely with the two experts in the field, Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.
Job hunters who use “Click and Apply” wonder why they are not getting interviews and ultimately taking far too long to get a job. I hope you are not using “Click and Apply” as your major tactic. You have many more strategies and tactics to make an effective job hunt.
The only Job Hunting system I recommend is the Guerrilla Job Search System.
The system works, because it helps you do what you do best. Kevin and David have been interviewed by Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.

If you want to know why I think the Guerrilla Job Search System is so effective for job hunters read my review of it here.
