I created my response by applying the character trait of enthusiasm to each of Napoleon Hill’s 16 lessons from The Law of Success. As you will read in the various comments from people below, almost everybody see’s how enthusiasm is important to one’s success.

My relentless negativity holds me back in almost every aspect of my life.

When I speak enthusiastically about my work people want to listen. It shows the confidence and passion I feel for what I am doing and it’s infectious!
It is a great networking tool and helps to open up any conversation and in turn, deepens your connection to others.
In my role as a Coach, enthusiasm for life, for new experiences and for discovering your passion and purpose is really important. It has certainly supported the growth of my business over the last 12 months.

As with anything the key is moderation. When I first started networking I was rather over enthusiastic – which actually turned people away. Once, I learned to temper enthusiasm with moderation, things started moving along quite nicely.
[ZT - Napoleon Hill speaks about this exactly in The Law Of Success. He stated that enthusiasm must be subjugated to the character trait of Self-Control. Too much enthusiasm or misplaced enthusiasm can lead to destruction. To quote Napoleon Hill -
"Without self-control enthusiasm resembles the unharnessed lightning of an electrical storm - it may strike anywhere; it may destroy life and property."]

Enthusiasm is everything – as with any relationship – learning how to deliver your message with enthusiasm for the perfect deliverance to your audience is key to success. But with me – I don’t change anything about me – I am considered honest, open and ethical and adaptable to any situation. However, I tend to be myself – so whatever enthusiasm I am feeling that day – will be brought out – but I normally figure out the shy one (which I intentionally go to and ask many questions – just to bring them out of their shell – they usually look at me and say I never tell people anything – why you – and I say because I asked?) the one who really doesn’t do anymore than they have to – those peeps are so fun to mess with or the ones who think the day has only begun because of them – showing peeps you have passion for just living the day is what success to me is all about – So go and show enthusiasm and sooner or later – you will have followers too!

I am known for my eager enthusiastic and optimism, people say I am so positive it is almost unrealistic, although this has helped me touch many lives, as this is a benefit for me, for I have found majority of the people very negative. I read an article this week, that we are fast becoming a depressed nation, and I feel that I am lucky to possess the trait I have.

I am in Business Development for a leading ATS, and often speak with cold leads. The only way I or you will ever break the ice is with enthusiasm. A bad attitude or a fear of rejection comes through on the other end of the phone and it’s the last thing a client or potential client wants to hear. Enthusiasm gets people involved, excited, and more likely to carry on a professional dialogue.

Enthusiasm, like curiosity, often kills the cat.
I’ve sat in too many meetings with too many professionals who have enthusiasm and "working well with people" as their strongest skill sets. I often find these folks to be the least capable, because their enthusiasm for actually doing the project disables their ability to listen to the project’s goals and objectives. Yes, these folks can be entertaining to work with — after all, they "work well with people" — but at the end of the day, I would rather have realists around me who temper their enthusiasm with a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with an assignment.

Owner, Personal Best Training Solutions and Managing Partner Dale Carnegie Business Group (Maritimes)
To quote the great Dale Carnegie, "Enthusiasm is the little known secret to success". And so it is.
I know many people with similar skills but haven’t a wide chasm in their level of enthusiasm, and the enthusiastic people are always moving forward in their careers… coincidence? I don’t think so.
I have also been accused many times for having a higher level of enthusiasm when I do my coaching, selling and parenting as well, and in every case, I see a certain level of success. I have consistently high ratings for the projects that I coach, my sales levels are high (but not high enough… I’m enthusiastically working on that) and I have 3 fantastic kids!
Many people ask me where I get it, and I usually answer "Enthusiasm is always a choice" In this life you have two choices, you can choose to feel happy, or you can choose to feel crappy… only you can make that choice.
As a matter of fact, in my new ebook, "MUST Thinking: An easy four step guide for creating the results you want", The main element of successful living IS enthusiasm. (mustthinking.com)
Enthusiasm creates belief in yourself and in others.
If you want a quick method for generating instant enthusiasm, I’ll give you 4 of them:
-
Your breathing. Deep cleansing ones. Use it to clean out the negative and inhale the positive.
-
How you walk. Walk with purpose, avoid aimlessly shuffling to where you want to go.
-
How you stand/sit. Think taller, give your body unrestricted access to inhale new cleaner air. If you are hunched over, it is almost impossible to physically breathe in deep.
-
How you think. Like I said earlier, if you think negative, that is exactly what you will get.
Ask better questions of yourself… instead of "Why me?" ask "Why not me?" So, in conclusion, if you are searching for your own little known secret to success, try enthusiasm! You will never regret it.
[ZT - My absolute favourite Dale Carnegie quote is "If you act Enthusiastic - You will be Enthusiastic" I learned that in my Dale Carnegie course over 15 years ago. And its the only thing I remember verbatim.]

Any person who exudes enthusiasm can be successful and all successful persons are those who exude enthusiasm.
Unless a person is enthusiastic in his/her pursuits, being successful cannot be ensured.
Enthusiasm is contagious!
It attracts people and once relevant connections are drawn into this person’s circle of influence, it becomes all the more easy – to get things going.
Hence enthusiasm is absolutely essential to succeed in any endeavor.
Enthusiasm activates a superb thought process – not just in the mind of the person concerned but eventually triggers a lot of positive stuff around and creates a positive atmosphere for people to get involved.
This especially helps in wonderful brainstorming sessions, meaningful and focused discussions and work-groups.
Simply stated, it activates all other required things – passion, fun, excitement etc. required for any endeavor to be successful.

Let me start out by saying enthusiasm is FABULOUS!!!
I use my enthusiasm as a means to light the fire under people. My exuberant personality has helped me motivate people to do what they believed they could not. I help them dance around the barriers as if they weren’t even there, as I do.
I think my enthusiasm is more for other people than it is for myself. It has a tremendous affect on others and people can feel it whenever they spend time with me.
As a writer, I use it to paint celebratory pictures of those that I write about. They love looking at themselves through my eyes. Because the interviews are so much fun, I am able to put them at ease and tap into their true enthusiasm. It comes across in my articles. It also allows me to get interviews with VIPs that are highly protective of their time.
There’s something zany about a person that is focused on the possibilities. I don’t mind what the nay sayers think or express. I am much too busy living the life I enjoy.
Enthusiasm gets you places that money, status or education can not. It’s often a deal maker and I am thankful that I possess it in large quantities.

Yes, I agree with you. Enthusiasm is the most important catalyst in focusing our positive energy to achieve our perceived goal. It enhances our blood circulation, makes us youthful & fills with abundance of creative energy. If one mixes enthusiasm with positive thinking, it will be a winning combination. Enthusiasm is not confined to any age group. It is the way of living life. One can be enthusiastic at any age. It reduces dullness & negative thinking. People who are full of enthusiasm radiates positive energy around them, they are likable & can be a good motivator.
Coach-Life Transformation/Hope & Serenity/Addictions
Your preamble is fulsome. Enthusiasm is a very important quality, and a key to successful relationships and outcomes. It is a large part of the Law of Attraction.
If you cannot tackle things with enthusiasm, they are not worth taking on. Enthusiasm does not have to manifest like a cheerleader, there are arduous tasks that we dread, but enthusiasm helps get them done.
Simply put, each success I have enjoyed in life, including a relationship with a higher power and major life changes, occurred because I was enthusiastic about the moment. It is a quality that helps me achieve, and when showed outwardly, it can be "caught" by others.
If you ain’t got it, you get in your own way, and successes are unlikely.
[ZT - I didn't know what fulsome means. When I looked it up in Google I realized I was probably being disagreed with - but your comments seem to agree with me. So I am confused - which is pretty much standard for me. Have a nice day Keith and good luck with your new business.]

Enthusiasm inspires others and in many cases positive outcomes will result. If you are truly passionate about your craft enthusiasm is a natural product. If you are talented in your field and enjoy what you do your energy and willingness to help others will surround you .The key is to determine the parts of your position which permit you to be enthusiastic and allow the positive energy to flow.

Enthusiasm has been an asset of mine throughout my career. However, most professionals can see through created enthusiasm.
I think many people get enthusiasm and passion confused and ultimately look at them the same. This is a problem. True passion for something you do and believe in is not superficial and will not been seen through like created enthusiasm.
Passion shines through like a beacon whether on the phone or standing in front of someone. Enthusiasm often is forced into oneself when they are passionate about something.

I like this question. I believe that enthusiasm helps to create the energy necessary for success. As noted a positive approach is attractive, infectious, and can be used to generate momentum. However, to be really powerful it must be joined with skill, expertise, and commitment to maximize the value of enthusiasm. The real question is how effective are you at what you want to accomplish? What tools are necessary to make your goals a reality? These are topics that I cover in "Are You Ineffective?"

Enthusiasm to me resembles the famous sonnet by William Shakespeare on love.
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

It keeps me from falling into a depression when I hear about hard economic times. There is as much a psychological factor in surviving recessions as there is a financial one. When you are enthusiastic, you continue to make decisions and take risks, which get you ahead no matter what the circumstances.

Enthusiasm is like a magnet. People will be drawn to it.
Enthusiasm is a differentiator. People with higher levels of enthusiasm will get the job or get the sale.
Enthusiasm creates focus. If one is enthusiastic about something, they will have more motivation to succeed.
There are probably many other results enthusiasm can lead to. I believe enthusiasm is one of the "soft skills" that makes managers leaders and makes people successful.

My enthusiasm convinced a skeptical boss to give me a chance. It was 20 years ago. He doubted my ability to do the job. My enthusiasm (and belief in myself) led to his grudgingly giving me a trial period. I worked very, very hard – - proved I could do the job – - and kept it. Each morning I arrived at work with enthusiasm in my voice. While at work I never wavered from my conviction I could do the job.

Sometimes people choose to perceive enthusiasm negatively — to discredit you.
A number of years ago I experienced this. I well known professor from
The next morning, the professor had another scheduled presentation at the convention. He approached the podium and humbly began his speech by apologizing for his enthusiasm at the previous day’s presentation.
I hung my head, feeling how inappropriate it was for me and the others to prejudge this person because he was enthusiastic about his life long work. He was a highly successful person, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Although I did not know him well, I was influenced by his excitement about everything he did in life not only research but his other interests as well.
I relive that incident often even though it happened more than 20 years ago. I occasionally hear feedback or negative comments which critics think have cleverly phrased as a compliments about my sometimes evangelical presentations. It is unfortunate that some people will try to use a person’s enthusiasm to discredit them. These are likely people who cannot really get excited about what they are doing, maybe they never felt passionate about their line of work.
I will continue to be enthusiastic because I get significantly more positive comments about my enthusiasm.

I enthusiastically agree with your answer to your own question. Enthusiasm is an incredibly powerful tool to create momentum.
Enthusiasm can also be used to combat fear and nervousness and it can even create temporary energy and willpower. Being enthusiastic also creates an overall feeling of happiness and well-being that makes it worthwhile regardless of its positive side-effects.
There are so many reasons to be un-enthusiastic (apathetic). The media is constantly bombarding us with messages of fear, tragedy, and cynicism. The people we are around tend to lean more to pessimism and derision rather than to enthusiasm. With such an environment, how can we hope to cultivate the kind of enthusiasm we need?
Enthusiasm is like any other ability. If it is continually exercised and practiced, it gets better. If it is not, it will corrupt. It rarely comes naturally and must result from conscientious effort. Practicing the ability to use enthusiasm can keep you excited and driven even in horrible circumstances.
True enthusiasm can only be upheld in something you are passionate about. Anyone can get themselves hyped up, in the moment, over any given situation, but unrelenting enthusiasm can only come when you deeply care about a cause or purpose. If you aren’t truly interested in the outcome, you won’t be able to create true enthusiasm. Passion provides the catalyst, without it there is no enthusiasm.
Here’s an interesting fact: enthusiasm can actually be temporarily created relatively easily…simply by acting more enthusiastic. By simply acting more enthusiastic, you can literally create the same level of enthusiasm inside. It will literally change the way you feel.
I’d like to say more about this incredible power, but time restrains me. The benefits of enthusiasm are infinite! From improving social skills, productivity, and confidence to reducing fear and shyness, enthusiasm is an incredibly powerful tool. Focusing on your passions and working on your own personal energy will give you the base you need for enthusiasm.

Very few people have a strong desire to spend lots of time with Eeyore (the downcast donkey from Winne the Pooh).
Also, not simply enthusiasm, but enthuse with value. Enthusiasm without value is like affirmations from people who don’t bother to stay abreast in their respective niche’s.
SO, stay current – bother to understand your niche and stay at or near the edge. Add enthusiasm. Then start sharing with others.

YES, all of those things are true. My enthusiasm draws people to me and it shows on the outside, sort of like a heart on a sleeve kind of thing, everyone knows what I am feeling, I can’t hide it.
It motivates me to do my best and to be the help that others need; to give what I can contribute to my job, my family, my friends, my co-workers and to my community.
It shines like a beacon to the world to let them know that I am here – come and see me, follow and I will guide, sounds kind of like blowing my own horn, but that is what is said of those of us that can DRAW people to us and we are taught that lighthouses saved lives in storms and that is what I would love to be a lighthouse! That is how I will succeed.

I am often accused of being enthusiastic, and I have to admit that I use it as a cover up. That’s right, in reality I am bent on helping others, every hour, every day, every month and every year. It’s a real addiction and I don’t think there is a cure.
I once knew this guy Bob from Winter Park Goodyear where I worked as a mechanic. Every time you met him, he appeared contrived and wound up. If you asked him how he was doing, he would say in his most perky enthusiastic voice "Every day’s a bonus!” He had an older car and he drove it relentlessly and we saw it every 3,000 miles or when he killed it. When you were telling him what was wrong, you could SEE the anger seethe within him. It was kinda scary.
So, it became apparent to me that enthusiasm could be dangerous. Especially an enthusiasm that was self perpetuated. If you were going to be enthusiastic, you had to have a reason other than it’s a good thing to be. What’s the use in being enthusiastic with clenched teeth all day?
That’s about the time that FUN became my prime motivator. If I couldn’t have fun doing something, then I just wasn’t going to do it. Now, this could be seen as an attempt to be lazy. Labelling something as "not fun" was simply not acceptable. The game was to find the fun in everything that I did. No, this wasn’t a Pollyanna approach to life either. There were times to be sorrowful, and I wouldn’t take those away at all. But for the most part, everything I did was made into a game. How could I do it faster, or better, or easier or… you get the picture.
Well, having fun is habit forming. Heck, it’s addictive as anything. Soon you find yourself having fun in long meetings, next you will find yourself having fun when everyone else around you is frowning. Go ahead and give me the unpleasant job, because I am going to turn it into a game just to spite you! No one else has control over my moods except ME.
Has this caused me to become a volunteer? You betcha. I dedicate 160 hours each and every year to volunteer work. Why not? It’s incredibly fun! Has this caused me to change careers? Yeppers! Now I get to travel the world talking about SCUBA! How fun is that? I get to meet fun and famous people and sometimes I get to dive with them. I have to say that my wife sometimes suspects me… "I’m going to the
So how does this all relate to helping others? The most fun you can ever have is to serve another human being. Oh, it’s absolutely true! In fact, that’s what ScubaBoard is all about: helping people to have fun Scuba Diving. The best part is that the more I help, the more I get to help. Whatever you give will be given back, full measure, pressed down and overflowing. You just can’t beat that.
So in the final analysis, let your enthusiasm grow from your desire to help others. You will find it to be genuine and able to withstand all sorts of disappointments.

In my country it’s almost impossible to find a job. But I always tell people, if you want to find a job, than you should really work hard on building your personality. You can join an NGO, take some classes to learn foreign languages, management or whatever.
This probably will not take you directly to your new job, but it will help you gain experience, meet new people and connect with them. The more people you now, the bigger are the chances that someone of them might point you to a new opened job position.
Another thing is that companies want to hire people with experience. And you’ve got to start somewhere. You can start by doing small things, because small things lead to bigger, and bigger, and bigger….
So, be active, communicate with people, and most of all, ALWAYS THINK POSITIVE! If you always say "I can’t do it" , probably you can’t! But give it a try, people make mistakes, and we learn from mistakes!
If you always say "people don’t like me" , let me tell you: THEY DON’T like you!!! Ask your self why? It’s not the problem in the people around you, it’s in you! Why? It’s because you are not fond of yourself, you don’t believe in your self, and most of all, you are not aware of your potentials.
Potentials are hidden inside of us, we all have them. We just have to explore, think, try to do many different things in life, until we find them out.
And when you find your biggest potential, your biggest strength, YOU WILL SUCCEED!!!
So you’ve got to be an enthusiast, to be open minded, optimistic…
Positive people attract other positive and successful people!!!

Enthusiasm SELLS.
It frames the content we communicate
1) Answer a question with Enthusiasm, even if you are wrong or are lying you will be (or are more likely to be) believed. (The word beLIEve has the word lie in it.)
-For someone interviewing for a job: this is so important. I never heard a hiring manager say ‘find me someone with ZERO enthusiasm.’
-If one is unemployed and has been rejected or pushed back remember the next person you are interviewing with is meeting you for the first time. So get into that zone. How do players get out the bench and jump into a game? The get into a zone, do pre-game mental prep in seconds. (This gets into the "how to" of enthusiasm)
Please note: For someone screening people make sure the experience backs up the enthusiasm.
2) I just wrote the following to one of my connections halfway around the world in response to a private LinkedIn Q/A "You always bring passion, idealism and seriousness to what you do". Writing, not just the spoken word conveys enthusiasm.
***Enthusiasm: It SELLS and it is CONTAGIOUS, so SPREAD it wherever you go***

Why, it’s the essence of professional life. Those no longer "enthused" in their jobs need to seek another diversion, if not accept retirement. The latter is for the benefit of not just themselves, but for everyone they connect with in their business life.
Does the average retail clerk at Blockbuster really care "how you are today?" Not if they are unenthused, they do not. Have you seen that new Lowe’s commercial where the movie ticket seller unemotionally asks the customers, "are you going to see a movie or not?" The unenthused often offer horrible customer service and their lacklustre demeanour does nothing to brighten the days of others.
I have remained enthused about what I do, because I love what I do. What you love you usually do well at. I think my enthusiasm towards work and life, in general, has made me successful in more than just monetary ways.

Enthusiasm, to me, is about enjoying all aspects of your life. Making a goal to be passionate in the areas you want in your life. Once you have this you automatically succeed. An example is my swim. I’m a triathlete and the swim is one of the hardest deliverables for me. 9 weeks before my first race I couldn’t get across the water. But I was determined.
At this point, I’ve completed 13 triathlons, I’ve joined a masters program to continually train with a great coach and I can now swim up to a mile and a half. Enthusiasm equals passion which equals determination which leads to success. At least for me.

I feel my success in professional life is a reward of enthusiasm.
In today’s highly dynamic world, challenges are changing even before you successfully come out of one, new challenge emerges. In such environment frustration is natural. However self belief and enthusiasm keeps you up, always.
I can quote many examples form my life. However the best example is from my B-School days. As a campus placement cell member, my role was to generate Database of companies and HR professionals. It’s a tiring job and I used to work in the placement cell till 3 AM. And I start my day at Placement cell at 8 AM. This enthusiasm became infectious and all my batch mates started helping me in my work. We started having at least 2-3 batch mates with me in the placement cell till 3 AM. Result was, the best ever campus placement for our institute.
In short, I would like to quote American Poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson – "Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever achieved.”
Speaker, Author, Productivity and Organization Consultant/Coach – Founder Calahan Solutions, Inc.
Enthusiasm is a very important quality for any business person to have. Enthusiasm is defined as "Great excitement for or interest in a subject or cause." Anytime you have excitement or interest in what you are doing, you will do it better. I often find that expressing enthusiasm about my client’s success (not fake – but real interest mind you) is quite helpful in their attainment of goals.
My enthusiasm about a subject ensures I will spend time on it. For example, if I was int enthusiastic about LinkedIn and helping others, I would not be out here reading and answering questions. I would find something else to do with my time.
I have found that most mediocre performers lack enthusiasm about their tasks. When you can connect interest and skill it is a great combination!
If all you have is enthusiasm, however, there are instances where actual results will not happen. Enthusiasm plus action is virtually unstoppable. If action is not a part of enthusiasm, you often get a lot of positive talk with no results.
It is also very important to understand how to share your enthusiasm. This is something that took me a long time to learn. I am very passionate and love to share with people. That passion can leave people overwhelmed if you are not careful. Different people can take different levels of enthusiasm. If you are enthusiastic about a topic and are talking to someone that is interested in hearing what you have to say it can be quite powerful. If, however, you talk to someone that is not ready to focus on what ever you are enthusiastic about, your enthusiasm could be your downfall. The person could get overwhelmed and tune you out. Sometimes communicating baby doses of the information you are enthusiastic about is much more effective.
If you don’t have excitement or interest in what you are doing in your business, maybe it is time to think about some kind of change.
Here is to hoping that you have enthusiasm with the things in your life!

Enthusiasm is a necessary ingredient of success, but not the only ingredient.
Creativity guru Edward de Bono provides a good framework to better understand the role of enthusiasm. He proposes the use of six thinking hats, each with its own colour.
The yellow hat represents optimistic thinking, or enthusiasm.
There are other hats which can complement the yellow hat, such as the
black hat (negative logic),
the red hat (passion and emotions),
the green hat (growth and renewal),
the white hat (facts)
and the blue hat (structure and planning).
The high rate of failure of startups might indicate that people go into business with much enthusiasm (which is a good thing), but have neglected the other aspects of success.

Enthusiasm is the willingness to do something that might even be against your will, but that grows so strong in you that you are willing to forget about everything wrong, sad, augmentable, painful, dislike, non ability, negativity, and everything that simply can be classified as negative. So Enthusiasm to me is living in every respect, the opposite of negativity.
It’s starts by being willing, being curious, that causes some form of excitement, and that leads you on a path you realize you actually love and enjoy and want to be a part of. The success, or happiness you see in someone else’s eyes or the positive response you get makes you exited about your accomplishments. So enthusiasm makes you want to do more, work harder, do better, no matter your condition or circumstance cause you know, you yourself as a human being is doing well and it is the only form of self motivation. Motivation is what others give you, but enthusiasm is the only form of motivation you can give yourself whilst having a smile on your face, being over eager to do what you love and remain exited about it no matter the hard parts, cause it all is just simply part of doing what excites you.
Businessmen who stresses a lot, who makes things difficult, who becomes hard and impersonal, and neglects their business and their employees and personal touch towards their clients, are the ones who neglected to remember what they love and why they are doing what they are and therefore lost their enthusiasm.

The old adage goes "whether you think you can or you can not… you are right"
Enthusiasm is the one thing that can get you through the worst of times, situations and circumstances regardless of what is lying in wait for you.
Enthusiasm is the mainstay for every person that hopes to achieve success.
Without Enthusiasm victory is hollow and unsatisfying
Enthusiasm will see you through to the end and maybe even beyond.

Enthusiasm has been very helpful, but it takes a combination of other attributes to be successful. A positive attitude is one, surrounding yourself with the right people is another.
