A dripping faucet in the middle of the night is a terrific metaphor for success.
What happens – you lie in bed hearing the “drip” “drip” of the faucet.
Each drip is nothing. It has no effect on your water bill. No effect on the energy bill. Nothing at all. It has no effect on your staying awake. The sound is nothing.
But after an 10 minutes of “Drip Drip”. It starts to have an effect. Its all you can hear. You toss and you turn. At the end of the night you will have lost a full night’s sleep.
If you let the drip continue for days, your water bill and your energy bill will be scary.
The little “Drip Drip” will effect your life.
The “Drip Drip” effect is actually one of the most powerful success strategies you can employ.
It happens all around us each and every day.
An excellent orthopedic doctor does not become the best overnight. No mater how smart and capable s/he is. It still takes time. What happens – they study the procedure, they watch the procedure, then they start doing the procedure. And then they do it over and over again.
Each time they do the procedure they learn something new. Maybe its just a slightly better way of holding the scalpel. Maybe its a easier way to hold bone. Maybe its a new complication that they weren’t aware of. What ever it is – it improves the surgeon and the surgical procedure.
I once read a study that showed that surgical outcomes improved significantly after a surgeon has done more than 100 surgeries of a specific type.
This lesson is simple, something our mothers told us when we were young. “Practice make perfect”. The more you repeat a task the better at the task we will be. This is “Drip Drip” in action.
Here is how “Drip Drip” will help you retire.
David Chilton In The Wealthy Barber
talks all about the power of compound interest.Just save a little each and every day and letting that money sit and earn compound interest will provide a terrific retirement.
David’s approach is the power available when “Drip Drip” is applied to each “Drip”
Another use of “Drip Drip”:
Every year thousands of people run marathons and other races to raise money for charity. Millions of dollars are raised.
No single person is responsible for even a measurable percentage of the money raised.
Starbucks makes millions of dollars each and every year. Rarely is a purchase over $10.
This story is an example of the power of a large amount of people each contributing a small amount. “Drip Drip” strikes again.
When I run, a typical meter will take me two and 1/2 strides. A 42KM marathon means 42 x 1,000 x 2.5 = 105,000 strides. If the majority are at a my target cadence, I meet my goal for the race. Even if I stop to tie my shoelace.
The first time I did anything was a 1/2 marathon walk (21 KM) . When I completed it – I couldn’t walk for days.
Now as part of my training, I run 30Km and then go for a several hour bike ride with my kids.
What is the difference?
I run a few times each week.
No single run, nor any single week prepares me, but the some total of all the runs over several weeks and months prepares me.
As Mao said – “A journey of a 1,000 miles starts with one step.”
Preparing and running a marathon Running is applying “Drip Drip” to a goal for a specific date.
In 1923 the concept of studying one page of the Babylonian Talmud a day – called “Daf Yomi” – was introduced.
Until the concept of Daf Yomi was introduced, studying the entire Talmud was an accomplishment that was accomplished by a handful of people.
Two and 1/2 years ago – over 100,000 people who had completed got together in stadiums (including Madison Square Gardens) to start over again.
An accomplishment that takes 7 1/2 years to complete.
Most of the people who do the Daf Yomi, have jobs and businesses and families. Typically they spend only about 1 hour a day to this accomplishment.
Daf Yomi is applying “Drip Drip” to the accomplishment of a huge task.
My friend George has a great life. He gets up late every day. He takes cruises. He visits his grandkids. He jogs. He plays on the Internet.
What is George’s secret?
He worked each and every day for a large corporation that had a pension plan.
He may not of liked his job everyday, but he stayed at it and 25 years later, he is reaping the rewards.
Everybody can accomplish a huge task.
The rules of “Drip Drip” are simple.
- Pick a large accomplishment – something that will make a difference in your life when completed.
- Schedule the time and everything works around it. Do it the same time.
For example: Every morning after brushing your teeth. Monday nights, Or the first of the month. - If you miss the day – Don’t stop. Just start again.
