All growth comes after you do new and very uncomfortable things.
Think of a baby learning to walk or a butterfly leaving its chrysalis.
My daughter is learning to play guitar. Her fingers hurt, but as she presses on, its uncomfortable for her.
How many uncomfortable actions are you willing to take each day in your job search? That number will largely predict how fast you find work.
Example: I’ve met hundreds of job seekers who struggle for months to get hired because they do only what is comfortable. Usually this involves surfing employment Web sites and emailing resumes into the ether. As a result, their careers are literally in a state of arrested development.
I call this surfing, “Click and Apply”. There results are equal to the effort they are putting in to it.
You should welcome feelings of discomfort in your job search, like calling a friend of a friend to arrange an informational interview, or attending a chamber of commerce meeting to find leading local businesses and meet people who can hire you.
Each time you are uncomfortable, you are stretching yourself a little more. You are building the calluses you need to get the job you want.
If a new action is making you uncomfortable, it is doing the same for other job seekers.
These other job seekers are your competition for the job.
Don’t be like your job competition, they will likely revert to their old, ineffective habits.
If you keep doing actions that make you uncomfortable, you can’t help but grow, learn, and improve.
All of which puts you closer to your next job.
Remember my daughter? She has developed some calluses on her finger tips to protect her fingers. She also now plays the guitar.
