I have said this before,  I will repeat it again, and I will say it again in future posts.

  1. Getting a job requires everybody in the world to know that you are looking for a job.
  2. Getting a job requires that you focus on a small number of companies and work that list.
  3. Getting a job requires that you know what you are offering.

Use the list of 20 companies you want to work for and send an email to everyone you know personally and ask them to please read the list and see if they know anyone who works at any of the 20 companies.

Give one reason for each company why you think you can help the company specifically. You can use a new product being released, a purchase, something a competitor has recently done, you know how you can help so do it.

For example:

General Motors – I can help GM get their marketing focused on generating sales and getting customers into the showroom.

(I didn’t say this was going to be easy – in fact nothing worth having is.)

This should not ever be used with your LinkedIn contacts. If I received it from a LinkedIn contact who I don’t speak with or know, I would consider it rude. LinkedIn requires an entirely different approach – which is well documented elsewhere on http://www.ZaleTabakman.ca – use the search box to get started.

But, if an e-mail like this came from one of my running buddies, or the husband of one of my Curves members, I would look at the list and see how I can help. And if I competed against one of the companies listed, I might be interested in the reason and might be interested in hiring you or at least having a conversation.

In your e-mail ask them to contact you if they know anyone so you can ask for a referral.

Ask for a referral at every company where the reader knows someone.

In your close, ask them to forward your email message to ten more people.

If you email your list to 10 people and they email it to 10 people and… Within 4 cycles you have covered 10,000 people.

Don’t get your hopes up too far – more than likely it won’t happen that way because its a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend.

But if you belong to a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or have some affiliation with a non-profit organization that you have helped out with – it can and might. You are part of their group – they will have some affinity to you.

If the e-mail is done right – you have nothing to lose. Test it on a five friends first, see what happens and make some adjustments for the next five, and the next five, and the….

Action Steps:

  • Be specific – tell people to only forward your email to no more than 10 people, because a request of more than 10 creates a burden and then they won’t mail it anyone.
  • Put your email, LinkedIn profile address,  and other contact information in the message so people can email you or contact you back directly.
  • Only put your phone number in if you don’t mind having people call you.
  • Don’t put anything in the letter you wouldn’t want a stranger to have. It is e-mail.
  • Put your name and email address at the top of the message in a “From:” salutation, so they can find your coordinates quickly.

This article is just a small sample of how you can do to take control of your Job hunt and make it effective. I work closely with the two experts in the field, Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.

Job hunters who use “Click and Apply” wonder why they are not getting interviews and ultimately taking far too long to get a job.  I hope you are not using “Click and Apply” as your major tactic. You have many more strategies and tactics to make an effective job hunt.

Guerrilla Job Search System DVDThe only Job Hunting system I recommend is the Guerrilla Job Search System.

The system works, because it helps you do what you do best. Kevin and David have been interviewed by Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.

Go right now and listen to a sample of how Kevin and David will get your job search into high gear

If you want to know why I think the Guerrilla Job Search System is so effective for job hunters read my review of it here.
