This tactic could be a challenge for you – but its very powerful.
Call the personnel department of the twenty companies on your target list.
Ask their manager or recruiter what outside agency or third party recruiting firm they use.
Why?
The following are some of the things that can happen:
- First, the personnel person will want to to know why.You answer sets them up for the second reason – say this -“I’ve been to your web site and I understand that you’re not looking for someone with my skill set right now but the agency you use may be dealing with other firms who could use my skill set — so I guess I’m looking for a recommendation from you.”
- You have complimented them and like most people – they will start to like you. Then they may want to help you and ask you about your skill set etc., which will be nice. But, don’t give in – they were just being nice. Controlling your response will be your biggest challenge – and if you do it – you will be successful.
- Instead of answering their questions – tell them “I didn’t call you looking for a back door into your company but if you want to have a cup of coffee sometime I’d be happy to share my accomplishments with you.” If they push you – then you have been given permission to sell yourself shamelessly.
- In the unlikely event, they don’t press you for more information, insist on knowing whom they use and why.
- To learn how to leverage the knowledge is too complicated for these short articles, the Guerrilla Marketing DVD David explains how to leverage the contact information.
Action Steps:
- Personnel Managers love saving money on fees, so they may try to hire you directly.
- Personnel Managers tend to group together by industry and make referrals to each other.
- Always ask for the name of a specific person and their direct dial number.
- Get permission to use the Personnel Manager’s name as a reference.
- Ask if they personally know of any other companies that could make appropriate use of your skills.
- Send them a thank you note with a copy of your resume to keep on file for their future requirements.

This article is just a small sample of how you can do to take control of your Job hunt and make it effective. I work closely with the two experts in the field, Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.
Job hunters who use “Click and Apply” wonder why they are not getting interviews and ultimately taking far too long to get a job. I hope you are not using “Click and Apply” as your major tactic. You have many more strategies and tactics to make an effective job hunt.
The only Job Hunting system I recommend is the Guerrilla Job Search System.
The system works, because it helps you do what you do best. Kevin and David have been interviewed by Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.
Go right now and listen to a sample of how Kevin and David will get your job search into high gear
If you want to know why I think the Guerrilla Job Search System is so effective for job hunters read my review of it here.
