How To Immediately Create A Website That Works
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on August 4th, 2009
I know you are job hunting and you think websites are only for businesses or writers.
In these 77 Guerrilla Job Search tips I have over and over told you you about creating different things to market yourself.
We have talked about white papers and different ways of using them
We have talked about brochures, books, and many other different things.
I have given you ideas about starting your consulting business.
All these things were to market yourself to a customer – oops did it again – an employer.
Well, actually there is no difference. A customer and employer are the same. They pay you for delivering a service and you are paid for the time you spend doing it.
You can be an employee, get a regular salary, and they take the taxes.
You can be a consultant, chase business and not have a steady salary.
In both cases you should have a website and make sure it looks professional.
If you are not a programmer then are there are two ways to do it, the hard way and the easy way.
The hard way – which is pretty cheap:
- Finding a hosting company – I recommend WestHost. If you go this route, tell them I called.
- Install Wordpress – I use it.
- Find a theme – I have used severl different ones.
- Install the different plugins your will need – I am currently using over 30.
- Learn to manage the site.
- Learn to do SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Learn about Feeds
- Learn about e-mail marketing
- Write your content
Why is it cheap – because you have to do the work. I am cheap and I do the work, but I have a degree in Computer Science which has helped a lot.
I don’t recommend it for any of my clients. And if I were to do it again, I certainly would not.
The much easier way which costs about $100 more is:
- Go to SBI! buy a package – let them worry about everything other than the content.
- Write your content
The difference in price is about a $100 a year – Check out the difference between SBI! and the other options.
Why do I recommend SBI! so strongly?
Many people use SiteBuildIt! to make some extra money – but for the job hunter, the website can be up and running in days generating real job opportunities.
- SBI! is simple for anyone and I mean anyone to use: Check out the 2 1/2 minute video.
- SBI! teaches you how to write the content to connect to your customers – oops I mean your potential employer. The training is absolutely free – check some out
How To Write For The Net,
How To Sell Consulting Services,
Here are 14 training courses. - SBI! Includes every tool you need and many you will not have a clue how to use.
Here is a list of the tools included with SBI!.
If you’re not artistic or technical by their templates are second to none as far as I’m concerned.
They look professional and and are included.
You add your own words and customize it to fit your needs or you can hire them to do the job for you.
Action Steps:
- Select a template which matches the industry you want to go into.
- Have a newsletter box.
- Your content needs to focus on your industry knowledge and your ability to do a particular job or the series of jobs you want to be hired to do.
- Put up all articles you have authored.
- Find other articles from other people and add them wtih your own comments. RESPECT copyright laws!
- Put up summaries of your white papers and encourage employers to contact you directly or at least register to receive the entire document. This will build you a stable of leads as well as tell you who is reading your site.
- Link to other sites which have content that would be of interest to your readers.
- One last comment – SBI! encourages you to name the website related to the content. I disagree – use your own name, like I did. That way your name is associated with the expertise on the site. It will get you that great job.

This article is just a small sample of how you can do to take control of your Job hunt and make it effective. I work closely with the two experts in the field, Kevin Donlin and David Perry, co-creators of the Guerrilla Job Search System.
Job hunters who use “Click and Apply” wonder why they are not getting interviews and ultimately taking far too long to get a job. I hope you are not using “Click and Apply” as your major tactic. You have many more strategies and tactics to make an effective job hunt.
The only Job Hunting system I recommend is the Guerrilla Job Search System.
The system works, because it helps you do what you do best. Kevin and David have been interviewed by Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor about their method to finding a job.

Get That Job Door Open Anyway You Can
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on August 3rd, 2009
This is the second last article in the series and so its a bigger one than normal. It combines lots of different ideas.
You know that people love to learn stuff and it represents an opportunity for you.
Have you thought of giving them a book which embodies the value or values you can bring to a company?
And why not make your own book?
You can self publish it.
The content can come from the 12 different white papers that you have written.
(And if its good enough to give to companies, make some extra dollars selling it as well . Here is an some ideas on creating an e-book and selling it around the world.)
Another option is to go to www.successories.com or www.successitems.com and select from a variety of professionally done booklets which will cost about $4-7 each.
Booklets like Companies Don’t Succeed People Do or Motivation Lombardi Style are good choices. You can send one with a note that simply says,
“Please accept this book as an indication of my interest in your company.
If you’re interested in discussing how I may be able to help you reach the goals you’ve set for your company, I’d be pleased to have a coffee with you.”
This is a soft sell approach that is a very solid yet subtle way to get your foot in the door.
Follow your mailing about ten days after sending it with a personal phone call.
Ask them if they’ve had an opportunity to glance through it and if they have any interest in having a coffee.
When they say “yes”, be prepared to put on your consulting hat and enquire about what their business goals are and if the company is hitting all of them.
Be prepared to offer up stories which relate what you’ve done for your other employers.
Frame your story this way:
- the problem;
- what you did to fix it; and
- what the results were.
You want to imply subtly that perhaps you could do the same for them but you’d need to get more closely involved.
You may want to try closing them by asking if it’s an important concern they intend to address any time soon.
If it is, suggest the employer “consider” looking at a short term contract.
Short term contracts can lead to long term employment if executed correctly. Never offer to fix it for free.
If in doubt as to what to charge ask them what they think is “fair”.
The word “fair” will disarm most employers because if they are really interested in solving the problem they won’t want to chisel you for fear you’ll walk away.
Action Steps:
- Research their company like crazy.
- Research their industry like crazy too.
- You have done this and you have created your great content.
- Focus your questions on the whole business first and then move into your area of expertise.

Its time you moved into the YourTube world
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on August 2nd, 2009
Have you ever considered doing what the members of “Survivor” and “The Apprentice”, do?
Its a technique that works well.
Produce a video, burn it on CD or DVD, and distribute it to potential employers.
Put it up on YouTube.
Keep it on your website.
Keep it tasteful and highlight the results you achieved on one or two projects.
Ask for an in-person interview.
There is no excuse not to do it.
You can burn your own copies of the DVD for less than $2 complete with the box.
Action Steps:
- I bought a Flip at WalMart for under $300, and it comes with the video editing software built in.
- Use a DVD box because you can tuck a resume inside the front cover.
- Personalize every one of them and I don’t just mean the label.
- Start each video telling the employer why you’re interested in working for them.
- Talk about the research you did to conclude they’re a good fit for your skills.
- Highlight accomplishments which would be of interest to them.
- Ask for an in-person interview.
A Case Study From Jim Moens, Owner, SearchWorks www.searchworkscareers.com
I had recruited a young guy (very early twenties) for a Visual Basic Developer position at one of my clients. Call him Dan. Dan had a two-year computer science degree and had been working for a year and a half to two years as a sort of one-man IT department for a very small, rural manufacturer.
Dan did it all…programming, networking, support, you name it.
The day before the interview he and I met for lunch. Dan brought along his laptop and proceeded to show me how he had developed an application for my client, based on information he had gleaned from me, their website and other sources.
He had been working on it every evening for the past week, and I have to say, it was most impressive.
Good functionality, slick interface, intelligent use of technology…simply awesome.
The day of the interview came and went. He did well, just as I had expected, but we were a bit nervous. Another, more experienced programmer had applied on his own and interviewed as well. I spoke with the client just as he had made the decision to hire my candidate.
He stated the deciding factor was (no surprise) the ‘homebrew” application my candidate developed….proving, in one fell swoop, that he could, without a doubt, do the job, and perhaps most important…he proved who wanted it more.

Work with others to get new jobs fast
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on August 1st, 2009
Are you part of a group of people all let go at once?
There is power in that you know.
If you are all part of one business unit, there is a company that might want your expertise as a group.
They could be customers of your company or they could be suppliers. Maybe even a competitor or two.
If you and others have been downsized, “right-sized”, or otherwise reallocated, consider building and promoting a web site for all the affected employees.
For the company this is good corporate citizenship.
Former Nortel employees broke new ground when they did this with www.hiretoptalent.com.
Eventually the site had several thousand Nortel employees on it and employees from other companies as well.
Recruiters flocked to the free site.
Hire Top Talent was newsworthy.
It garnered a lot of media attention which just helped propel the brand and fuel the growth of the site.
Action Steps:
- Use SBI! to quickly create a site and get the word out to the media.
- Make resumes available in Word, ASCII and Adobe PDF format.
- Promote the site to recruiters, head-hunters and temporary help agencies.
- Promote the site to customers, suppliers, and competitors.
- Use a virtual PBX from Ring Centra. to make simple for people to contact people part of the program.
- Engage me to help create a marketing plan for your group.

Do You Know How To Use Voice Mail To Your Advantage?
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on July 31st, 2009
I love voice mail.
Yes, I really do.
To me its an opportunity to leave a 15 to 30 second commercial.
I do it all the time. I call at night, leave a message about something great and tell them I sent an e-mail followup.
Works like a charm every single time.
Here is another approach suggested by Tony Parinello in his book, Selling to VITO.
Tony described the time he was leaving a voice-mail message for a prospect when he accidentally hung up the phone in the middle of his message.
Like all smart and successful people he immediately got sidetracked by another call, but later in the day the person he accidently hung up on called him back and said, “finish your message.”
Try it, make sure you identify yourself first and phone number before you hang up in the middle of the sentence. Don”t rely on voice mail and keep track of who you did this with. It only works once per person.
If you are looking for an accounting job try, “I’m calling about your book keeping. It appears [hang up]” wait until they call you back and then finishing the sentence with, “it appears your company is … [fill in the blank]” and see if there are any openings you should apply for.
Tony has a host of other ideas every month on his web site at http://www.sellingtovito.com
Action Steps:
- Keep the voice mail short.
- Leave a generic message that would be of interest to the employer.
- Leave the impression calling back is in the employer’s best interest.
- Apologize for the power outage that caused you to leave only half the message.
- Ask for referrals if appropriate.

Companies send online surveys out all the time and they offer a free gift as a way of thanking the person.
The online survey usually has four to five screens to complete and if you know the company or are interested in the free gift, people will spend five minutes filling out the survey.
Why don’t you do a similar thing?
Send a survey on hiring trends and target employers you’re interested in.
You can ask an almost limitless number of questions which could reveal their hiring intentions
Tell them its part of your job hunting effort and would they mind helping out.
For the right people, do it backwards, send the gift first.
The survey question are to help you figure out who is hiring and why.
Action Steps:
- Send the gift only to hiring managers and not to Human Resources.
- Keep it small – because it can get expensive
- Expect a 2 to 5% return – 2 to 5 people for every 100 you send out.
- Never send alcohol or food which could spoil.
- Think about sharing the cost with several other people looking for jobs with the same companies.
- Send your resume to whichever department they indicate is hiring.
- A gift need not be an item you buy, it could be one of the white papers you’ve prepared – send it bound, not PDF.
- Give an Eat Sleep Geek Product From Cafe Press to give out.
- Don’t forget to use the results of the survey in other white papers.

Direct mail works, here is another technique
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on July 29th, 2009
Everybody likes getting a postcard.
It means somebody was thinking about you.
Why not use the same technique to get the interest of the person who can give you a job.
Remember the last time you received a post card from someplace far away, , Paris, New York, Las Vegas, Sudbury?
You would have flipped it over straight away to see who it was from.
In their book How to Get Clients Jeff Slutsky and Marc Slutsky’s customer did the same thing.
She paid her kids to address post cards from Los Vegas which she then sent to her potential customers.
You can do the same thing by writing this line on the back, “Don’t gamble on your next hire. Call me, and let’s talk about how I can help you build your business.”
Action Steps:
- You can use any casino’s postcards.
- A picture of dice has a similar affect.
Here are a couple of options to consider:
- Put a picture of something in your industry in obvious distress and change the back to “Don’t let this happen to you. Call me, and let’s talk about …”
- Why not put logos from all the companies you have worked for on the front? The line on the back can be “These are some of the companies I have worked for…”
- You could show images from different countries and say “”These are some of the places I have helped my employers make money…”
- Make sure the postcard does not look like a sales pitch – it will ruin the effect.
- Let your imagination run wild!
- You can create great postcards real cheap at at Vistaprint
or Uprinting
- The effect is not the same with the e-cards so use real ones.

How To Offer A Free Sample Of What You Do

Everybody likes a free sample.
Everybody understands the concept of a gift certificate.
Everybody has some project that needs doing.
And everybody likes something for nothing.
And if you are good at what you do at job, then a free sample of what you can do it is the best way to get a job.
Send a gift certificate to the companies you want to work for.
The gift certificate provides an offer for a fixed amount of your time or for a particular piece of work you are willing to do.
For example, you could offer to rework one of your white papers into a specific review of the company.
Your offer should be focused on the job you want to be doing if they were to hire you.
After doing the job follow up with a quick survey on your level of quality etc that they must send back to you.
Action Steps:
- Gift certificate must make clear what the value is. Perhaps $250 of your time, and then make sure you spend ONLY that amount of time – if the job they asked was too much for the time – maybe they will engage you in a contract to finish it.
- Measure hourly salary by taking your salary, divide it in half and then knock off three zeros. That will give you your hourly wage. For example $50,000 a year person makes $25 per hour.
- Arrive on time, do a great job, and leave your work area absolutely spotless.
- Print the certificates on a postcard from Vistaprint
or Uprinting
- Get a referral or testimonial if you don’t get hired.
- Use the testimonials in your brochures or Guerrilla Job Hunt Resume to land the next job offer.

How To Handle Four Common Job Hunting Frustrations
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, Job Hunting, Job Hunting Resources on July 28th, 2009
As you might imagine, many things are frustrating to job seekers.
And generally, I find the frustrations come from the way they are doing things.
There is an old saying, if you don’t like the results you are getting with the way you are doing things, change the way you do things.
While, that is easier said than done, its possible.
I recommend slow, small, and consistent change.
You can remove many of the frustrations, if you change the way you are doing things.
“I submit my resume for a posted job and never hear back from employers.”
Here are three ways to make sure your resume is received and read.
1) Call the employer before and after applying.
Obviously, you can’t do this if you’re using “Click and Apply” techniques to send resumes out by the dozens each week, By picking and choosing carefully which employers you apply to you can follow up on each one of them. Smaller employers are more likely you are to connect with the hiring authority when you follow up by phone.
2) Hand-deliver your resume.
This method is the best.
You can get interviewed and hired after hand-delivering when hand delivering your resumes and do the following:
- Dress professionally;
- Request to personally give your resume to the hiring manager, if refused, politely schedule a meeting at a later date;
- At the least, leave a copy of their resume with the receptionist and have a chat with the receptionist so that they remember you; I find a compliment does wonders.
- Call or visit again until you get a meeting.
- When you visit a company to drop off your resume, be ready to interview on the spot, in the lobby — it has happened!
3) Mail your resume.
Nowhere is it written that you cannot mail a resume after submitting it online. With a little some work on the employer’s web site and/or Google, you can find the name of your potential boss and their mailing address.
Still unsure of who to contact? Call the employer and ask!
“I’m over-qualified for most positions I apply for.”
The problem about being over qualified is that employers may fear your getting bored in a role dealing with budgets in the thousands of dollars, if you’ve worked with millions of dollars before.
Or they the employer may fret that you’ll leave as soon as a better job turns up.
To allay those fears, use your cover letter to highlight your record of long-term employment, alternatively offer to sign an agreement outlining a minimum stay in a new job.
Understand that “over-qualified” can mean “too expensive” for some employers, who fear being able to match your salary demands.
Explain in your resume and cover letter that someone with your experience can save or earn significant amounts of money. Then, prove it with specific dollars and figures. Ideally, you will show employers that hiring you is like buying money at a discount — you can earn or save multiples of every dollar you get paid in salary.
“Recruiters and headhunters don’t call me back.”
Lower your expectations. Unless you already have a solid relationship with one, now is not the best time to expect callbacks from recruiters. They are struggling too.
The best way to establish a good relationship with a recruiter is to make it clear to them that you understand their goal is to place the absolute best candidate. Help them understand why you are the best candidate and you will help them close the sale.
There reasons are many in this recession, according to Mark J. Haluska, Founder & Executive Director, Real Time NetWork (www.rtnetwork.net).
“Most recruiters have a glut of candidates and they’re besieged with unsolicited resumes to fill a dwindling number of assignments. So, before a recruiter ever thinks of calling you, they comb through their database of candidates, looking for someone they know is a proven winner,” says Haluska.
Should you follow up with a recruiter, to make sure they got your resume?
Perhaps.
“You could make a call every couple weeks, if only to leave a voicemail. That should eventually result in contact with the recruiter.” But, be on your best behavior and avoid letting any frustration show; otherwise, “your resume will end up in the shredder,” says Haluska.
“I have no time for networking.”
You have time for eating and sleeping. Why? Because they are necessary for survival.
Without a job, you will have no food to eat or roof to sleep under.
So make time to network. Even if you have to eat or sleep less for a few weeks … or watch less TV or relax less on weekends. You can always catch up on that later.

A Humourous Way To Get In The Door
Posted by Zale Tabakman in 66 Day Job Club, 77 Guerrilla Job Hunting Tips, David E. Perry, Guerrilla Job Search System, Job Hunting, Kevin Donlin on July 27th, 2009
Everybody likes a funny joke.
And jokes that are “Groaners” always get a smile from someone.
And the purpose is to get a smile from someone.
Here is a technique that uses bulky mail and is guaranteed to get a smile
Go to Walmart or a deep discount store and buy a pair of loafers that are real cheap.
Get two shoe boxes.
Send one shoe in one box with a card that says, “Now that I have one shoe in the door let me introduce myself…”
Yup, its tacky.
Yup, its silly.
Yup, nobody does it because its tacky and silly.
That means you can do it and you can get away with it.
Action Steps
- Make sure the shoe is brand new and looks it.
- A black dress shoe is best.
- Don’t EVER send a high-heeled lady’s shoe because you may be sending a message about the wrong kind of job.
