When I began searching for the secrets of success many years ago, I discovered an interesting principle: success leaves tracks.

In other words, if you want to be a big success in any area, find out what other successful people in that area are doing, and do the same things, until you get the same results. By learning from the experts, you will shorten your learning curve and accelerate your results.

You can find lots of stories of job hunting success on www.ZaleTabakman.ca, in fact this is the basis for the entire website.

That’s what I did. When I studied the interviews, speeches, biographies and autobiographies of successful men and women, I found that they all had one quality in common. They were all described as being “extremely well-organized.” They used their time very, very well. They were highly productive and they got vastly more done in the same period of time than the average person.

I followed their paths and it made me who I am today.

Brian has published over 40 books, he travels the world extensively. He speaks to thousands of people every week. His largest audience was over 83,000 people. I would say that Brian’s approach works.

Here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action:

First, develop a study plan today to learn from the experts in your field. This can save you years of hard work.

There are lots of opportunities to learn how to find a job on www.ZaleTabakman.ca – take advantage of it by taking action.

Second, of all you’ve learned decide what is the most important thing to implement, and then decide how to do it. Then do it.

Who the heck is Brian Tracy and why does the job hunter care?

Job hunters looking for Internet advice will over and over again come across ads for Brian Tracy but not have not actually read or listened to his content

People recognize his name and face just from the ads. A few paragraphs of describing Brian Tracy will help a job hnter readers understand who he is, what he stands for and why he is so promoted.

Here is the corporate Brian Tracy description (emphasis mine):

Brian’s goal is to help you achieve your personal and business goals faster and easier than you ever imagined.

Brian Tracy has consulted for more than 1,000 companies and addressed more than 4,000,000 people in 4,000 talks and seminars throughout the US, Canada and 40 other countries worldwide. As a Keynote speaker and seminar leader, he addresses more than 250,000 people each year. He has studied, researched, written and spoken for 30 years in the fields of economics, history, business, philosophy and psychology.

He is the top selling author of over 45 books that have been translated into dozens of languages. He has written and produced more than 300 audio and video learning programs, including the worldwide, best-selling Psychology of Achievement, which has been translated into more than 20 languages.

He speaks to corporate and public audiences on the subjects of Personal and Professional Development, including the executives and staff of many of America’s largest corporations.

His exciting talks and seminars on Leadership, Selling, Self-Esteem, Goals, Strategy, Creativity and Success Psychology bring about immediate changes and long-term results.

As you can see, Brian certainly has credibility. But what does it mean to you? Can he make a change in your life?

Each of us is different, and each of us has different challenges in setting and achieving goals. And many of these challenges, while different in specifics and common in many aspects. Brian’s big thing, is his ability to help people set and and achieve their goals. This is basis of his approach and everything else is built on it.

Brian identifies and describes many of the different challenges people have a) setting goals, b) not staying focused on those goals, and c) not taking the actions required to implement those goals.

As its been said countless times, half the battle is understanding the problem.

Identifying the some of the specifics for these three problems has enable Brian to craft solutions that touch and are meaningful to each of us.

For some of us, just a description of the problem is enough of a start to make the break through we need.

For other challenges, having a some specific strategies can force us to overcome the problem.

This combination gets any person who wants to achieve great things in their life started. We are all thinking creative people and we are able to expand on the simplest ideas.

The next step is to implement the different skills, and Brian has a wide selection of skills and ways to apply these skills. Starting from improving sales to raising children to increasing our own self confidence.

Brian body of work is consistent with all the great giants of self improvement.

As you read the hundreds of pages of this site, you will see I read and continue to read many of the giants of the past and the present with the singular goal of becoming a great myself.

I will have achieved that greatness when I become a regular on Oprah.

To achieve this goal means I need to read and listen to success writers every day.

I write and apply what I have learned to myself each and every day.

Though this “hard work” I am slowly becoming an expert in success.  This is why I am in awe of Brian Tracy and his accomplishments. Every talk, book, article of Brian’s summarizes a wide range of sources, presented in a structure and an organization that makes it understandable and doable.

Brian continually teaches explains the application of he calls “The Natural Laws” of human endeavour. If we use these laws correctly, we can achieve anything. Brian shows us how to make these laws work.

Here is a summary of Brian’s laws, while the names are his, the descriptions are mine.

  1. The Law of Control - which means you can control the direction of your life. Its the law!
  2. The Law of Cause and Effect – You are living the effects of previous choices. Setting goals will change your new choices.
  3. The Law of Belief – What you believe will effect what you are.
  4. The Law Of Expectations – You will get what you expect.
  5. The Law pf Attraction - You know this one! You attract what you expect.
  6. The Law Of Subconscious Activity - Have your subconscious do most of your work for you.
  7. The Law Of Substitution – Think happy thoughts whenever you have negative thoughts.
  8. The Law of Concentration - What ever you concentrate on most will be what happens to you.
  9. The Law of Superconscious Activity – Anything you think of regularly will happen.

To expand on the point about the giants, Brian’ weaves in the concepts and the approaches of giants from the past and modern writers who are are becoming classics. From the past comes Wattles, Haamel, Napoleon Hill, and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and from the present are people like Stephen Covey and John Gray (Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus). The result is a complete whole and multi-facetted.

Brian started by teaching sales people set and to achieve their goals, but the skills and self-confidence that sales people need, we all need and can benefit from. What he has done is taken that core content and applied it and expanded it in many different areas and many different ways.

My Brian Tracy story is pretty simple, I first heard of Brian Tracy when I began studying the sales skills. I listened to one of his tapes and was immediately impressed. Later, when I received an offer for one of his teleseminars, I signed up. I feel the teleseminars seem to be the best deal, since you get a book, and several CD’s and get to hear Brian live, and the opportunity to ask a question during the chat.  I was surprised later to receive a transcript of the teleseminar, a MP3 of the teleseminar. It was probably mentioned, but I didn’t notice it. ( You can go to find details of a current Brian Tracy Teleseminar.)  Once I received my big box, all the content went on my Product Red Nano with Itunes.

My Brian Tracy library has multiple books and countless CD’s now. I have shared some with my children and in each of my classes.

As you can imagine, I am still listening to everything from the last time I purchased. Once I have listened to all the current content, I will signup for something else. I find the listening is good enough, the book is sitting on a shelf waiting to make its way to bathroom reading.

An interesting question about Brian – Will Brian Tracy last through the ages like a Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie or will he become important but obscure like Wattles and Haanel?

While its hard to compare practically, Brian’s books are as popular now as Dale Carnegie was in the 1940’s. So the answer is a definite yes, 100 years from now your great-granddaughter will be telling her friend about your margin notes from a Brian Tracy books.

And I have gotten my Goals! book signed. I am very proud of that.

Like the great’s Brian’s content is organized, structured, and consistent. He has a pleasant listening voice, but speaks rapidly and repeats himself very infrequently, so sometimes I find myself replaying sections of the recording. Most recording are broken into small sections, so its pretty easy to navigate.

I strongly recommend you start by listening to one of his CDs.

Efficiency is doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things. Your ability to plan and organize your work, in advance, so you are always working on your highest value tasks determines your success as much as any other factor.

The ABCDE Method for Priorities

The process of setting short-term priorities begins with a pad of paper and a pen. Whenever you feel overwhelmed by too many things to do and too little time in which to do them, sit down, take a deep breath, and list all those tasks you need to accomplish. Although there is never enough time to do everything, there is always enough time to do the most important things, and to stay with them until they are done right.

Setting Better Priorities

The best method for setting priorities on your list, once you have determined your major goals or objectives, is the A-B-C-D-E method. You place one of those letters in the margin before each of the tasks on your list before you begin.

“A” stands for “very important;” something you must do. There can be serious negative consequences if you don’t do it.

“B” stands for “important;” something you should do. This is not as important as your ‘A’ tasks. There are only minor negative consequences if it is not completed.

“C” stands for things that are “nice to do;” but which are not as important as ‘A’ or ‘B,’ tasks. There are no negative consequences for not completing it.

“D” stands for “delegate.” You can assign this task to someone else who can do the job instead of you.

“E” stands for “eliminate, whenever possible.” You should eliminate every single activity you possibly can, to free up your time.

When you use the A-B-C-D-E method, you can very easily sort out what is important and unimportant. This then will focus your time and attention on those items on your list that are most essential for you to do.

Just Say No

Once you can clearly determine the one or two things that you should be doing, above all others, just say no to all diversions and distractions and focus single-mindedly on accomplishing those priorities.

Much stress that you experience in your work life comes from working on low-priority tasks. The amazing discovery is that as soon as you start working on your highest-value activity, all your stress disappears. You feel a continuous stream of energy and enthusiasm. As you work toward the completion of something that is really important, you feel an increased sense of personal value and inner satisfaction. You experience a sensation of self-mastery and self-control. You feel calm, confident and capable.

Action Exercises

Here are three ideas that you can use, every day, to help you set priorities and to keep you working at your best:

  1. First, take the time to be clear about your goals and objectives so that the priorities you set are moving you in the direction of something that is of real value to you.
  2. Second, remember that what counts is not the amount of time that you put in overall; rather, it’s the amount of time that you spend working on high-priority tasks.
  3. Third, understand that the most important factor in setting priorities is your ability to make wise choices. You are always free to choose to engage in one activity or another. My best selling book Eat That Frog 2nd edition explains the ABCDE method as well as suggests the best ways to implement these ideas.

Resolve today to set clear priorities in every area of your life, and always choose the activities that will assure you the greatest health, happiness and prosperity in the long term.

As a job hunter, there are thousands of things you should be doing.
Here are a few comments on these tasks:
A – Having 2 conversations interviews with a hiring authority each day to discover what your target companies are looking for. Anything to prepare for your target companies is an A task.
B – Making sure your resume and cover letters matches the 12 problems you can solve.
C – Updating your LinkedIn profile, resume, etc once you have 12 versions, each for one of the problems you can solve.
D – Learning how to job hunt. Get a course, read a book. They have done the work for you, just read and follow the instructions. This is Delegating the research necessary on how to job hunt.
E
– Meeting friends who are unemployed for coffee. This is not when there are specific times for your job club meetings.

What do wealthy people do or have that enables them to accomplish so much more than the average? I believe that these people are successful as a result of what I call leverage. Leverage is the key to maximizing and multiplying your potential for success and financial achievement. Here are three examples of leverage that you can develop to achieve financial independence:

Become an Expert

First, become an expert in your chosen field. Read all the books, take all the courses, listen to all the audio programs. Second, specialize in those areas that are of greatest importance and greatest value to your company or to your customers. And the third key is know your product or service inside out. Aim to be recognized as the industry expert in your field. Remember the person who has the expertise has a far greater contribution to make than the person whose knowledge is just average.

The job hunter should never become an expert in job hunting. But, become an expert in presenting your skills.

Develop Your Skills

The second type of leverage is skill. The better you are at your job, the more you will be paid. The top 20 percent of salespeople earn as much as ten and fifteen times the average earnings of the bottom 80 percent. There are three keys to developing the leverage of skill. First, make a decision to be the best. Pay any price. Make any sacrifice. Go any distance to become excellent at what you do. Second, engage in continuous improvement. Never allow yourself to become satisfied or complacent at your current level of skill. And third, always strive to exceed the expectations of your customers, your boss, of the people you serve. Always do more and better than you’re paid for.

Show off the skills in your resume, LinkedIn profile, and everywhere else.

Save Your Money

The third type of leverage is money. Money is a powerful source of leverage and usually follows the development of knowledge and skill in your field. One of the reasons that it takes money to make money is that the accumulation of funds is an essential step in the development of the personal qualities and character that must precede the achievement of financial independence. In other words, you become the person capable of becoming financially independent by accumulating the funds that are necessary for you to achieve it.

Remember, every day you are unemployed is costing you twice. Once on what you spend, and once on what you are not adding to your capital. The ROI of being unemployed is huge. Carefully consider how you spend your time. Make sure every moment of the working day is moving you closer to getting a job.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas on personal leverage into action:

  1. Resolve today to become an expert in your chosen field. Set it as a goal, make a plan and work every day to become a little bit better in the most important things you do.
  1. Develop the habit of saving money out of every single paycheck. It was once said that, “If you cannot save money, the seeds of greatness are not in you.” The very act of regular saving changes your character and gets you ready to achieve financial independence. Listen to my audio program Million Dollar Habits for more action items to achieve financial independence.

Every book, article, or course on this subject ultimately comes to the same conclusion: There are four key elements of effective listening. If you can master them, your “charm quotient” will skyrocket immediately.

You can use these four techniques during the information interview, use on the telephone, and when networking. Practice them at home when talking to your spouse, parents, and children.

Listen attentively. Listen without interrupting. Listen in complete silence, as if there is nothing in the world that is more important to you at this moment than what the other person is saying.

If someone wants to talk to you, especially at home, immediately discontinue all other activities and give that person your complete attention.

Turn off the television, shut the book or newspaper, and focus single-mindedly on what the other person is saying. This behaviour will be instantly recognized and appreciated, and will give you tremendous emotional power in the conversation.

To listen as if you are transfixed by what the other person is saying, imagine that your eyes are sunlamps and you are giving the person’s face a tan.

When a person is intently listened to by another, he is affected biochemically. His brain releases endorphins, nature’s “happy drug” which makes him feel good about himself. His self-esteem goes up and he likes himself more. Above all, he likes and trusts you more by virtue of your listening attentively to him. The payoff is extraordinary.

By doing this at home, it will become a habit everywhere. You will be the person that people say, “S/he really listens to me.”

Pause before replying. Rather than jumping in as soon as the other person takes a breath, pause for three to five seconds. Allow a silence to exist. Just relax.

When you pause, three things happen, all of them good. First, you avoid interrupting the other person if he is just pausing to reorganize his thoughts before continuing. Second, by pausing, you tell the person that what he said was important and that you are considering it carefully. This reinforces the personal value of the speaker and causes him to see you as a more attractive and intelligent person. Third, you actually hear the person, not only what he said, but what he meant, at a deeper level of mind. Try it once and see.

This is a killer for me, but it works when I can do it. The sad thing for me, was once I started to make it a habit, I discovered that I had taught my children to finish other people’s sentences. Do you finish other people’s sentences?

Question for clarification. Never assume that you know exactly what the person meant by what he said. Instead, help him to expand on his most recent remark by asking, “How do you mean?” or “What do you mean, exactly?”

Here is one of the most important rules of communication: The person who asks questions has control.

The person answering the questions is controlled by the person asking them. When a person is speaking in answer to a question, fully 100 percent of his focus and attention is on what he is saying; he cannot think of anything else. He is totally controlled by the questioner.

The trick to charming someone with this technique is to ask your questions thoughtfully. All great communicators know this and use it regularly.

Feed it back: paraphrase it in your own words. This is the acid test of effective listening, the proof that you were really paying attention, instead of engaging in the “phony listening” that is so common today.

When a person finishes speaking, you pause and say something like., “So, you just did this, and then this happened, and then you decided to do that, right?”

Only when the speaker confirms that’s what he said and meant do you continue, either by asking another question or commenting on what has just been said.
