[I have received a follow-up from the person about my suggestions about the Job Choice. I thought it would be worth sharing. The original article can be found at: A Career Choice Question ]

Great answer! [Referring to A Career Choice Question - ZT] Not too many people can answer my Q…Thanks for all your suggestions — certainly inspiring!

  1. I have begun adapting the visualizing process and   seems like a great tool to continue on with.
  2. This is amazing & a bit of a coincidence — I have  just ordered and listened for the first time to a CD, made by the same company of the “Secret”. It’s called “The Universal Mind Meditation”. Another wonderful tool to visualize and make thoughts a reality.
  3. Your point #3 is brilliant. I have already taken some of the steps to add new skills .I have just begin asking Q and getting more information by networking to become clear with the goal I am going to set up.
May I ask you a question:

I have set up a goal to become a VP Marketing & Sales in the next 10 years. How do I find out what’s the route I need to take to achieve it? This could help me help me chunk it my big goal up and set up my 5 yr and 3 yr goal?

What do you think?

I can’t tell you and I won’t tell what you should do. I can only provide you motivation and teach you skills to help you move in the direction that you choose.

I don’t know what industry, I don’t know your interests, and to be honest – I was a terrible employee at a company – so I can’t even tell you how to get promoted. I can help you with advice about how to grow your personal strengths, introduce some ideas, and provide you with the knowledge to get the tools you need for your life.

The details and the implementation belong to you and to your significant other. You must take full responsibility for own your future. You can never ever let anybody tell you what you should do in the specifics. Let them only provide you with the questions you need to get answered.

The world is always changing, as late as the 1990′s, executives expected to have secretaries who did their own typing. Now an executives need a whole new set of skills. What worked before Social Networking sites like LinkedIn will not necessarily work a few years from now.

In other words, any advice on specifics that you get from anybody – may not be relevant – because it comes from a specific person, at a specific time, in a specific industry.

I don’t know about your visualization CD, but visualization has long been a technique used by high achieving individuals. Shauna Sky, in my Tuesday’s With Zale interview told us how she visualized going down the slopes. In my Job Hunting resources article I recommend Stephen Pierce’s Visualization book.

About the visualization CD – I think that was a terrific idea. The major problem with The Secret is its not about execution and action – its only about the first step – dreaming the goals. The next step to create a goal plan. I recommend you enhance the visualization with the Brian Tracy book Flight Plan.

I think your goal for being a VP in 10 years is a great goal. I expect that if you focus on it, it will happen even faster. Add more specifics around the goal. What size company? What rate of pay (in today’s $ would you expect?) What industry? What city?

Next, I would suggest that you call a few  VP Marketing & Sales and ask them how they got there. Ask them about what they do. What the challenges are. How to handle the challenges. Many senior executives like to mentor others. They like to share there feelings and experiences. Its a bit of an ego boost, and they have worked hard, so they deserve the opportunity to strut about a bit. And you can be the beneficiary of it.

Don’t e-mail to ask your questions – get the VP on on the phone and interview them. Create a personal relationship with them. The call should only take about 10 minutes to get enough information. You will be shocked at some of the things that will happen. These people may become your friends, and who knows what else. If they are in your city – offer to take them out for lunch or dinner. Think of the cost as an investment in your own future.

You are investing in your own future aren’t you? Your purchase of the visualization CD is an investment, so is the purchase of the Brian Tracy content or anything else that helps you grow.

Make sure you speak to at least 3, but preferably 5 to 7. It will give you a range. And make sure there is a mix of men and women, each will give a different perspective.

You can easily find who you need to speak in LinkedIn.I suggest using some of the techniques described in my Seven Ways To Generate Business From LinkedIn presentation to find the perfect contacts.

What is the best – is that my correspondent is taking ACTION. It almost doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you are moving forward.

A person will make mistakes, lose time, lose money and even friends. But as long as you persevere, keep at it, give it time, review what are doing, review your goals daily, everything always works out.

You can find out about Brian Tracy’s Flight Plan here.

You can hear how Shauna Sky uses Visualization here.

To turn your thoughts into reality, what you really need to know is to master the principle behind creative visualization. Creative visualization is that ability to visualize or imagine something in such a way that you make it real. It is a technique practised by many successful people today. And you can possess this skill too. Stephen Pierce is a marketing guru who uses Visualization as one the techniques for his success. Click here to to learn more about his methodology.
