How Can I Find the Best Companies To Work For?

That’ is the question a person looking for a job seems to ask themselves each day. Its also a question they Google and after you read the 136,000,000 responses, you might get enough information to get a job.

Obviously it is a very hard question to answer, and I think its because its the wrong question.

I think there is an underlying problem here. I teach about it in my Magic Profit Formula Class (soon to be coming to YouTube). The assumption in that people want to get something for nothing.

What!!! Is  probably your response. Yes, I know you are honest and good and a hard worker.

But, you probably don’t want to think too hard about finding the companies to work for.

We are all the same. You and me and all humans — hate to think.

Why? It takes time. It means making a choice. It means we might make a mistake. It can give you a headache.

But not taking the time to think will mean that your unemployment will last longer and longer.

If we change the question a bit, we can can change the answer to something that will help. A good question always provides the basics for the answer.

If you are a senior executive and you have been job hunting enough to be frustrated. Ask yourself this question.

What have I NOT been willing to do to find the best companies to work for?

You will find this easier to answer.

And if you want to get a job at a great company to work for, you need to be a Guerrilla Job Hunter.

And here are the 4 things that as a Guerrilla Job Hunter you MUST do TODAY.

If you do them, you will find the best employers for you to work for …

1) Your LinkedIn Connections Can Identify The Best Companies

LinkedIn can be a fantastic resource for planning out your next career move.

I mean really look. Find senior executives in your network who have achieved in their career what you want to achieve in your career. Read their profiles (which is their resume) carefully and when you are reading get answers to these questions:

  • Where do they work now? (Could you work there?)
  • Where did they work before? (Could you work there?)
  • Who are their clients? (Could you work there?)
  • Who are their competitors? (Could you work there?)
  • Who are their vendors? (Could you work there?)

For every person you this for, you will find at least one prospective employer.

Don’t be afraid to contact these people and ask what it was like to work at those companies. They will be flattered that you took the time to read their resume so carefully.

2) Make connections at your last employers to find the best company

Another great resource is yourself.

Its time to review every company you’ve worked for. You can use your own LinkedIn profile.

Now ask yourself the following questions:

  • Could you work there again? (Could you work there again? Don’t snicker — getting re-hired happens every day.)
  • Could you work for your former clients?
  • Could you work for your former competitors?
  • Could you work for your former vendors?

3) Find the best companies in the news

For a local positions, everyday spend 15-20 minutes reading the Business section of the local newspaper. In Toronto read the National Post and The Globe and Mail for large companies, for small companies read The Toronto Star and the Sun.

Look for the fast, smart, and growing companies. Look for companies who are doing interesting things.

For large American companies, read Forbes, Business Week and Fortune. Subscriptions to all of them will cost you less than a day’s pay. Don’t be cheap!!

Can’t find anything local? Consider moving, but my guess is that you don’t know how to look.

If you don’t think there is anything in your town, that tells me its time for you to get the Guerrilla Job Hunting System.

4) Ask 5 people you know and admire to find the best companies

While this is last, it really is the one of the best ways.

The more conversations and networking you do, the more people will know about what kind of job you want. They will know the kind of company you want to work for. And the more people who know what you want and who you want to work for,  the faster you will get your next job.

Ask the 5 most-connected people you know for advice.

Here is how to do it.

  1. Take each one of the them out for coffee in nice place.
  2. Bring a legal pad, take notes.
  3. In 30-45 minutes, you’ll surely come away with answers that will shorten your job search.

It will probably cost you less than $30. How much do you expect to make in one hour? Imagine how much it will save you if you get a job one day earlier because of spending a few dollars. Each day of unemployment is costing you real money. I know with no money coming in, its hard to spend any. But, this money is investment in job hunting.

Don’t spend money hanging out with friends feeling good. Spend money that can lead to a job.
